Mixer with Firewire?

Band is looking to upgrade from beat-to-hell Yamaha powered mixer box, to a nice 16-channel passive unit with a separate powered mixer.

I like Allen & Heath; drummer is insisting that we should see if there is one out there that has Firewire so we can easily record our shows if we want to.

Budget is $1000-$1500.

Any suggestions?

+1 Presonus is about the best tool for this situation and it's only a few bucks over your budget if you shop direct from a dealer. I know 3 bands (including mine) that have bought them for a little over $1600 shipped. All the processing, fx, and live recording capability a working band would need, and fairly easy to operate. Not much can touch it for the $$$$.

Yes..yes it is. Because with that FireWire you get a full 32 track recorder. You also get a ridiculous amount of 31 band eq,s, parametric eq's, gates, comps, limiters, six dedicated aux sends, two dedicated dig verbs, you store all of your scene files......oh yeah...

You can hook them up to iPads and iPhones and iPod touch and control your monitor mixes wirelessly......

Yup, it was the best investment I have ever made in pro audio gear for myself and my band. Save your lunch money and buy what a mixer is NOW, not what a mixer was.

not sure how big your band is... but we just did that same upgrade, have a big band, and cheaped out going w/ the presonsus studiolive 16.0.2 for about $950 new (including carrying bag). we're a 6pc w/ 3 singers. only problem is inability to to mic everything on our 2 drummers - but i believe you can get a good recording and mix with a snare/kick/o-h ... leaves some $$ to get powered speakers.

Let me get this straight...
You recommend a $600 A&H mixer, and a $400 Presonus Firestudio. Which will also need (at least) another $200 Behringer ADA8000 to get 16 channels.

How is that a better deal than a Studiolive? Because for the extra few hundred (if even that much), you get a LOT more than than just digital recording capability.

Nobody said you need an A&H mixer and a Presonus Firestudio.

For 16 channels, you can use two FireStudio Projects at 2 x $400 = $800.

Presonus Studiolive is $1300.

And for the record, the Studiolive is a much better bargain than two Firestudios. Three times as much functionality for 1.5x the cost.

STUDIOLIVE 1642!!! Just do it!

For live: 16 channels with LPF, compression, gates, parametric eq, etc. 6!!! aux sends (I do 5 separate monitor mixes, plus feed the subs with the sixth), graphic and parametric eq on all aux, sub, and mains built in, plus two effects processors, a ton of reallly good starting channel strip setups, plus memory for all settings.

For recording live: 16 tracks to your laptop from every show. Capture is the software, it's simple, and it works great!

For recording: I've used most DAW's out there, including PT. Try the included Studio One software and you'll be hooked. It's THAT GOOD!

It's all in one box, it sounds amazing, and it's easy to use. I own one, and I use it for my own bands, in my studio, and doing sound for others. It blows the doors off a Mixwiz for quality of sound and features.

If your budget will support it, you can't go wrong.

If you have to use 2 Firestudio, you won't be able to work them with ASIO drivers that only allow one peripherical device at a time.
If one needs/wants 16 channels, the Studiolive is the way to go.
