Casey would have loved the small ball, and hitting into the shift holes. There is even actual discipline from the skipper, Starling got a night off after trying to steal with 2 outs down 3 runs.
Added bonus, I totally forgot it is a 1:15pm first pitch for the Syracuse Mets vs Worcester Red Sox, and it's supposed to be damn near 80 degrees! My lovely wife is driving back from out of town with friends, and I may even beat her home. She'll be bummed I went without her, she loves going, but this looks like a solo mission.

5 un-earned runs in the 9th for the Mets, they win 5-2 over StL! Unbelievable. One of the single craziest half innings I have ever seen in my life, and I'm 56.

Mets are hustling their buttons off, and playing very smart baseball. I'm sorry I ever doubted hiring Buck.
I was happy about the hire, but I had no idea the focus and energy Buck would bring to the team, and his coaching staff choices seem to be perfect. Hefner is the best thing to happen to a bullpen in decades, the way he coaches on the rail in between innings is actually quite remarkable in today's coddled superstar game. And only 36? Hot damn. The Mets are all on the same page, playing the right way. They are all laying out, and digging it to first, and while I don't like all the choices Starling makes, his threat to run on ANYTHING is having an impact on the opposing pitching and defense. How could it not? Dude is flat out fast, and flat out fearless.
Just watched last night's 9th inning again. Yeah, StL made some horrific errors, but that comeback was fueled by the Mets' hustle. Dom running for his life to 1st is what the game is all about. I don't care if/when the Mets fall apart, this bunch is really fun to watch again.

Is anyone else starting to hear/read more about changes to the baseball? It appears that it has higher seams and a grippier cover to help the pitchers out since the crackdown on sticky substances. I have no problem with that but it also appears to be less lively. I don't want a superball ricocheting all over the park, but when a good hitter barrels it up, I want to see it hit or go over a wall. It is still early but teams are scoring 1/2 run per game less than last year. For comparison, 1/2 run per game is roughly the same effect as lowering the mound in 1969 had.
Based on Buldog's and Lowandfat's comments, it looks like the Mets have made the quickest adjustment to the changes. Baseball rules/equipment/tactics don't change as much, or as often, as football, but they do change over time. The players and teams that figure it out how to take advantage, succeed.
Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe in his Sunday notes column said that "the world is a better place when the Mets are competitive." I'm not sure I'd go that far, but no one is paying me for my thoughts on baseball either.

On the ball, I'm hearing:
- lower compression (ball not traveling as far)
- trying to find a grippier ball, considering what Japan does with the tackiness pre-applied
- all stadiums have humidors, contributing to the travel lessening

Not sure how you equate the Mets record to adjusting to the baseball, and I believe their run production is way up. My thoughts regarding the changes is to:
Stop messing with the game. For real. Enough with ghost runners, enough with universal DH, enough talk of pitch clocks and robo umps, and sticky balls, and electric pitching sign widgets, and all these ridiculous gimmicks. Enough.
Fire Angel Hernandez, take back the salary he has stolen the last 20+ years with his clown act, get rid of all this gimmicky nonsense no fan asked for, and let's play ball!

For me one of the most disappointing half innings I've ever seen in 63 years.
And that's the second time my Cards have had horrible, and loss causing, jokes of half innings already this year.

Soon we find out how much the Mets really want to win. They will have to cut at least one position player, which means:
- Dom Smith - good hitter, can play first base or outfield
- Travis Jankowski - fast runner, good outfielder (two things they don't otherwise have on the bench)
- Robinson Cano - used to be a very good hitter (not anymore), can't run, not a very good fielder
All things being equal, Cano seems the obvious choice.
The Mets have to pay him $20,500,00 both this year and in 2023. Are they willing to eat the money (trade made under the previous owner)?

Yeah, I think Cano is the cut, too. Although selfishly I'll get to see anybody that gets designated for assignment here in Syracuse.
The Mariners are off tonight. Withdrawl symptoms... They were fun to watch last season, living on guts and hustle. So far they are the same this season with more plate discipline and more accurate pitching. The pitchers are getting people out with contact. The hitters are being timely, and the runners are alert. This is fun. Sure, they are also hitting the long ball. I will forgive them so long as they keep spraying singles and doubles around. Best part is some of them haven't got going yet.
The Jays were not able to complete the sweep in Houston a few days ago... but they still took two of three there, and in Boston, so I can't complain about that! They have now won two more against the Red Sox, at home in Toronto this time. It was a close one last night. Great come-from-behind win. You can never count this team out!
In the Denver area, we're all wondering if the Rockies are going to tease us with their fast start and maintain hope a while longer, or whether the recent losses are the start of the anticipated slide into the Slough of Despond.
There's a three-game home series this week which will tell us more. Their current road performance is roadkill.
