Saw deGrom pitch in Syracuse today, saw last Thursday, too. Today he gave up a couple and threw 60-something pitches over 4 innings. Not as encouraging as his first start here, seemed to have some placement issues early, but didn't give up another after the 1st.
Very light crowd compared to the full sell out last week, but it was only two day's notice, and a 12:05 first pitch on "camp day". The entire reserved seat section was not available for public sale, because it was ALL claimed by the busloads of kids. When we went to buy tickets just 8 minutes after the announcement, it showed the entire lower tier, pole to pole, already blacked out. We figured "now THAT'S a sell out!", and there would be lines out the parking lot. Nope, the place was less than half full, with most season seats vacant because Wednesday noon, and the campers not filling half of the sections they claimed.
Last Thursday was also "Congueros De Syracuse" night meaning deGrom didn't even wear a Syracuse Mets jersey, but instead some hideous red and blue striped thing they were giving away as a promo for Latin American awareness. That's right, deGrom starts in your park, and there is not a single picture of him wearing your uni. Syracuse is legendary for not being able to get out of their own way, but they really outdid themselves this time.

I was hoping the Jays would make a deal with the Reds for Castillo… I'm sure they were in on him, but I guess the M's made the better offer.
Not really. He won't help with their batting averages. My take is that they needed Soto more than Castillo.
I'll be shocked if Soto gets traded before the deadline. That will be a massive and complicated deal to negotiate. IMO the Nats are better off waiting for the off-season to figure out that situation.
That would not be a shock. Still, the Yankees and Dodgers don't seem to mind massive and complicated, especially if it only involves absurd amounts of money.
The Red Sox are sellers. Very awkward trade last night as Christian Vazquez found out as he was on the field in Houston in his Sox uniform that he was traded to the Astros. I always liked his game and attitude. The fans in Houston will like him and he will help the team.
The buzz is that JD Martinez is the big name who'll be traded. He would be a rental as his contract is just to the end of the year. The Sox are asking for the moon, but they'll take the best offer that is better than the compensatory pick they would get if they would have failed to resign him next year. JD is the epitome of a professional hitter and would immediately help any time that gets him.

Yeah, that Vazquez trade is an odd one. He should pretty well know Boston's entire game plan for how to pitch Houston's hitters, and then they go and trade him to Houston at the start of a series against them
How weird would it be for him to take the field at catcher (or 1st base) against the Sox TONIGHT in Houston? He could do either.
Losing him and JD hurts a little. Both were integral parts of the championship team. My daughters are taking it harder than I am. Those guys were world series heroes during their formative years.
It does hurt for a while when you are young. I was a teenager and I remember being pretty ticked off when the Red Sox didn't mail out his contract on time and Fisk ended up signing with the White Sox.
As it turned out, my formative years were my 40's.

It happens, but Houston (and every team in the AL East) generally doesn't need any additional scouting to beat the Red Sox. It will be odd to see Vazquez out there against us tonight, but with Houston, he has a chance to get another ring.
Yeah I'm preparing my brain for Houston to put him on 1st base for an inning. He's not ready for their pitchers yet.
