MLB 2023

Professional athletes age out pretty fast. There are always a few with long careers, but most only last a short time, then fade away.

It’s designed that way. Only finite money to go around so keeping a core intact is difficult if you manage to get a bunch of good players together in a year. The turnover in football and basketball is even faster.

and another ex-astro (this one developed in the astros farm system) becomes a mariner. shall i refer to the mariners as 'astros west'? they may become my 2nd favorite team

obtw i think they got him cheap ... mariners f.o. making smart moves [edit: just noticed hernandez is a f.a. after next season, so the price seems about right]

Blue Jays / M's trade alert!

Teoscar to Seattle for two pitchers

I figured one of Teoscar or Lourdes Gurriel Jr., maybe even both, would be on the way out this winter. Curious to see if they deal Lourdes as well. I will miss Teoscar. He's a super fun player. Doesn't seem like a great return, but I don't think his trade value was very high either.
His bat has been inconsistent and as such, does not make up for his lack of fielding skills, IMHO. He's either hot or stone cold, with the later taking most of his time!
Happy to see him go so he can boot the ball around somewhere else!

Swanson has his moments. I don't know anything about the other guy. This is a step toward having a serious offense in Seattle for a change. I wonder what it means for Haniger.

Well, I called this months ago. Rangers pick up deGrom for a five year buttzillion dollar contract, with no option for the Mets to match it. Love the guy, but he is perennially fragile, and will be 35 next year. Mets did the right thing. Too long, and too much money. He may win some games, but Texas will still stink.

Much more psyched about the Diaz re-signing than bummed about
losing Jake.

Long time Mariner fan here, too:
They have a history of trading off great players just before they have a career year, who then spend the rest of their careers pounding on the Mariners. Don't get me wrong - I had a great time watching them this year as they climbed into the playoffs (its been 21 years!). Even though they made it this year, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they trade any one of their best players before next season starts.
They traded Toro and Winker. Both were around the Mendoza line and were defensive liabilities. They got an aging second baseman who can still hit and field. I guess we will see how that works, but if he hits .220, he is an improvement. Pretty low bar to clear.

I'm worried the Mets are saying they want to address the DH in house. I like Big Vog, he is such a tough at bat, but he is a zero against lefties. Not exactly full-time DH material.

Part of building a good team is finding pieces that fit, and are cost-effective. Vog is $1.5M per year. If you can finda decent righty at a similar price, I'll take that any day over spending big bucks on a full time DH. It also allows you to rest Alonso on occasions. They have to give him and Lindor a few more days off next year (160 and 161 games last year).

Dunno if it's officially hot stove league time, but there's all kinds of Tradin' Jerry Dipoto rumors floating around here. The Mariners will probably be active again. They made a splash early. If they are true to form, there won't be anything that comes out of the winter meetings, then a shocker or two before spring training.

whoopsie! except the bucks weren't similar ... but a much shorter contract so there ya go. Sources: Mets, Verlander reach 2-year, $86M deal

Call me crazy, but I don't like it. It's an insane amount of money, and the Mets' starting rotation is headed by two expensive, older pitchers whose workload should be diminished (both work best with extra rest). Baseball card collecting. The sport needs a hard salary cap (and floor).

But yes, I will be rooting hard.

bluntly, i am glad the astros didn't spend that sort of money on verlander (for the very reasons to which you refer). he helped the club out a lot, but the astros can spend the money more wisely in other areas, like a c.f. &/or catcher.
When A-Rod got his huge payout with the Rangers, my immediate thought was that one guy might be good, but the other 23 are also pretty important. Sure enough, the Rangers sucked and he didn't get a ring until he went to the Yankees. Who don't seem to have any limitation on how much they can spend.
