MLB 2024

The Jays won this afternoon in San Francisco. That’s two series wins in a row. 4-2 so far on their 9-game West coast road trip 🤩 I was expecting this trip to be a disaster. Three games left in Arizona before the All-Star break. If they can win series in Seattle and SF then there’s no reason they can’t bring home a series win from Arizona too. Come on boys! Finish strong before All-Star. And then come out of the break even better please 🙏

Paul Skenes pitched 7 hitless but was pulled. Next batter singled but the Pirates held on to win 1-0. That dude is like nothing I've seen.

Skenes is going to be a pain for a while. I was hoping the Brewers would at least tie it up in the 8th, but not today. Oh well, brush this one off and take care of the Nationals.

Side note. My wife and I have seen the Nationals play here four of the last five years (no fans allowed in 2020), and we're going on Saturday. It's weird that the Nationals are the ones we have seen the most.

Do any of you folks play Immaculate Grid? It's a fun way to remember some guys in baseball (and other sports). It has become a part of my morning routine, either with my first cup of tea in the morning or on break(s) at work. I usually need some time to think it out... and even then it can be tough for me to complete the grid. I like the challenge. I mainly stick to baseball but occasionally take a crack at NBA or NHL (with very limited success )

I like to try to fill the grid with Brewer connections. It's not always possible, but it's fun to try.

So this happened:

For my money, I’ll take the .500-ish team that can maybe make some noise in the postseason if things break right for them. If they really tear it down to the studs, it’s going to be a tough watch. Those Astros teams of the early 2010s, for example, were unwatchable during their rebuild. It’s a wonder they retained any fans! Winning heals all wounds.

I am hoping the team keeps Vlad and Bo, and the younger cohort of position players on the way up right now (Davis Schneider, Spencer Horowitz, Ernie Clement). They should have a few decent starters left next year as well (Berrios, Gausman, and Yariel Rodriguez). It’s a decent bunch of players to build around. But there will be lots of work to do to potentially make it work. They need a far better bullpen if they have any hope of being a Wild Card team that can actually go anywhere in October.

They took two of three in Seattle this weekend, so that’s nice to see! Springer hit a three-run homer. Up until very recently, he’s struggled hard this year. The bat is showing signs of life again lately. I’m not sure if it’s sustainable or if this is just a dead cat bounce. He has looked rather washed for much of 2024 😬
You mean cheating and getting away with it heals all wounds.

Hard to believe that there are currently three teams in the AL Central that have equal or better records than the first place AL West team! Even the Tigers aren’t that bad. It’s really just Chicago stinking up that division right now. Quite the turnaround for the Central compared to last summer.
The Tigers aren’t bad at all. At least when they play the Dodgers and that moron Roberts hands the game to them on a silver platter. The guy has to go. Now. Today. Fire him. Please.

The Jays stumbled into the All-Star break after dropping two of three to the Snakes 🫤 Friday's game was winnable but they blew it. Saturday was a blow out. Thankfully, they put up a W yesterday. It was a winning West coast road trip (5-4) so I'll take it.

Yesterday they drafted a couple of pitchers. Sounds like there is a bit of hype around the college arm they took 20th overall in the first round. I dunno. I don't follow college ball. All I know is the Jays have very limited success developing pitchers in recent years, and that is something they need to get turned around. I am happy to see them drafting pitchers. It's a start. But what happens next is more important.

Prices for rental players will be high. More buyers than sellers.
No doubt. I cannot think of a single rental player the Mariners should go after if the price is excessive. They are building a powerful farm system, which has served them well. Trading away the farm led to 20 years of abject failure. I would rather see them continue to build rather than mortgage it all for a shot at a ring this season. If they keep building, they will have plenty of shots at a ring, not just one.
