For my money, I’ll take the .500-ish team that can maybe make some noise in the postseason if things break right for them. If they really tear it down to the studs, it’s going to be a tough watch. Those Astros teams of the early 2010s, for example, were unwatchable during their rebuild. It’s a wonder they retained any fans! Winning heals all wounds.
I am hoping the team keeps Vlad and Bo, and the younger cohort of position players on the way up right now (Davis Schneider, Spencer Horowitz, Ernie Clement). They should have a few decent starters left next year as well (Berrios, Gausman, and Yariel Rodriguez). It’s a decent bunch of players to build around. But there will be lots of work to do to potentially make it work. They need a far better bullpen if they have any hope of being a Wild Card team that can actually go anywhere in October.
They took two of three in Seattle this weekend, so that’s nice to see! Springer hit a three-run homer. Up until very recently, he’s struggled hard this year. The bat is showing signs of life again lately. I’m not sure if it’s sustainable or if this is just a dead cat bounce. He has looked rather washed for much of 2024
