MLB 2024

Or the west. The west is abysmal this year, with Oakland, Anaheim, and Texas all being pretty bad. Houston is back in it, though. The Mariners are giving me agita.
Hard to believe that there are currently three teams in the AL Central that have equal or better records than the first place AL West team! Even the Tigers aren’t that bad. It’s really just Chicago stinking up that division right now. Quite the turnaround for the Central compared to last summer.

The Mariners actually had bats last night. Are they waking up, or was it a teaser? They tease way too much. At least Julio finally went 4-4 this season. I keep waiting for him to start hitting. So far, not so good.
He actually had a 4-hit game back in April, but that line was 4-5 overall compared 4-4 last night.

But before either 4-hit game he had a golden sombrero (4 strikeouts in a game) on April 10 😆

That's the platinum sombrero. A golden sombrero is a 3 strikeout game, or so I thought. Both are really bad. I don't know what's happening with him. Girlfriend distractions or something maybe.

I believe a platinum sombrero would be 5 strikeouts in a game. That’s what I’ve understood the two terms to mean, anyhow. Fortunately he hasn’t done that yet!

Looking more at Julio’s game logs, he’s got twice as many 3-strikeout games as he has 3-hit games (8 to 4). Part of it is Julio struggling in some way, but another part is just that pitchers are so good these days.

The home run derby is getting like the slam dunk contest - if the best players aren't in it, it has a LOT less appeal. I think if they shortened it, more people would want to do it - it seems to take a lot out of them will all those swings, and unless you are a home run gorilla like Alonso, it can really mess up your swing.

I think there is one player in it with 11 HRs this season.

Julio isn't in it. He hasn't earned it so far this season. He was back to waving at the ball as it goes by yesterday. I dunno what to think. At least the Mariners took both games against the Padres. The Angels are awful this season and their pitching is mediocre to poor to very poor. If the Mariners bats don't light them up, I'll be very sad. The Angels are recalling a pitcher from AA ball who has a middling ERA to start in the upcoming series. That should be batting practice. Should be.

Nothing is for sure with this Mariners team. But somehow, they are still two games ahead of the Astros. If they can add a game or two before the break but still have no offense even against the Angels, I'm not sure what my head will do. The weirdness of baseball is on full display in Seattle.

I tend to think the NBA's Slam Dunk Contest is worse off right now. They can hardly get anybody to go in it. They only need four dunkers for the contest, and even still it's a struggle. A G-Leaguer (Mac McClung) has won the last two. Imagine if MLB was filling out the Derby roster with AAA players  Not to discredit McClung. He is a very good dunker, and he definitely had the best dunks the last two years. But the average fan has no clue who he is. He's only appeared in 4 NBA games in his career thus far. Nobody is tuning in to see McClung dunk.

I do still agree that the Derby would be better with more big names and star power. But it's not a bad roster for the 2024 Derby overall. Alec Bohm and Bobby Witt Jr. are somewhat curious inclusions. Bohm is the guy you referenced with only 11 HRs so far this year. But any of Alonso, Teoscar, Adolis Garcia, Gunnar Henderson, Ozuna, or Jose Ramirez could potentially put on a bit of a show if they get into a rhythm.

I still wish Vladdy was in there again this year.
