Who to root for? Hope this list by my friend Brand Stanhope helps. Go Mariners!

Feel free to use the list to prioritize your teams during the postseason, which starts Tuesday.
1. Mariners. Have never won a title or even qualified for the World Series. Charming team.
2. Brewers. Have never won a World Series. Smaller-market team.
3. Guardians. Roared back from way, way behind. Haven't won a title since 1948. I still call them the Indians.
4. Reds. They're playing the Dodgers first.
5. Tigers. Cool old-school uniforms. Also, I played for the South Bay Tigers in Little League.
6. Padres. Should be lower, but it's hard to hate them. They're kind of the Giants' rival cousin. Battle them, but cheer for them if you can't do something.
7. Phillies. They're a fun team. Once I start watching them, they may move up the list.
8. Blue Jays. I often forget they're a team.
9-10. Cubs and Red Sox. Teams that somehow became synonomous with "tortured fan bases," even though their fans are no more tortured than Mariners or Brewers or (pre-2010) Giants fans. They just have a lot of writers who like them and constantly beat us over the head with them.
11-50. Vacant
51. Yankees. Still the Evil Empire.
52-1,000,000. Vacant.
1,000,001. Dodgers. I guess there's a way you could root for them . . . no, there's not.

I grew up as a fan of the Big Red Machine in the 1970s. That was pretty much required if you lived in Ohio then. When I left Ohio, they became the Big Dead Machine. I don't recall seeing much more than a blip from them here and there. Not that I can say much, as a Mariners fan since 1997. Next year is the year has always been the Mariners' fan's saving grace.

The Reds had a solid team for a stretch in the early 2010’s. Bronson Arroyo and Johnny Cueto leading the rotation, Mat Latos was in there too IIRC. Aroldis Chapman when he just came into the league. Joey Votto at the peak of his powers, Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce, one really good season of Shin-Soo Choo.

I had been converted into a complete Mariners fan by then. Nothing else matters. Only the Mariners. Until (usually) July, when football season starts being important again. This season, football doesn't matter at all. It's a pleasant change, but as a well trained Mariners fan, I'm not counting on anything.

Early 2010’s wasn’t exactly the best time for being an M’s fan, except for getting to see King Felix and Ichiro do their thing. I guess it was the 2010 season when Felix won the Cy Young award despite the team having like 100 losses 🤣

I could go for a Mariners/Brewers World Series, Brewers in 4 (it would be good for my blood pressure not to go any further). You have the Yankees too high.
