Hi well I'd recommend one of the new amptweaker bass jr. You have your drive eq a noise gate and exactly what you wish - a dry low clean knob which blends lows only and they seem to sound great. Saving for the rock one now 
I really have to wonder what causes some users to hear the fizz and others to not hear it. I heard it on my early Finnish B7K, and I hear it on my current USA B7K, and I've heard it in various demos. I also heard that characteristic in the VMTD I owned. However, I've also heard many people say they don't hear it at all, and I've heard it be less noticeable in some demos. I have to wonder if there is a certain, responsible frequency range that certain basses/strings/amps/techniques push, and/or certain heads and cabs mask.
I'm definitely not a fan of the DG heavy distortion, though, there are things I appreciate about the clean tone, and blending of certain light distortion elements. I don't love it, but clearly I've owned two B7K units now, and currently hold one of them.
Or for A Few Dollars More, grab a new one. Like I did. This option is Clint approved.
I've heard good things about them in general, and the part of me that is a compulsive amp tweaker is definitely intrigued. But my first impression is that they'd be in the "more modern than I want in an OD pedal" bracket along with Darkglass, Aguilar, Damnation, etc.
Yup, especially after that other thread which got me thinking more about new vs. used. vs. reseller. My two top contenders were (new) 5th Gear and (used) Blueberry...but out of the blue I found a good deal on a Black Arts Revelation Superbass so I'm gonna try that for now. Looks promising based on clips I've heard and my past experience with Black Arts pedals, and it was cheap enough that I don't mind taking a gamble on it. Still going to keep an eye out for some of the other ones mentioned here though...
Hm, dunno. Seems like with so many new pedals, old designs being updated, pedals becoming easier or harder to find...long-running threads might not be as useful?
Although on the other hand, it is cool to see what people were using and recommending in the past since it definitely seems like different pedals/builders are always getting more and less popular with different groups of bassists.
EDIT: at any rate, this thread was super helpful for me but I'll definitely keep an eye out for future iterations, sticky or otherwise!
Been curious about this box. Not cheap, nor easily found, but has been a point of interest on TB.

+1 on the After Shock!
Also, take a look at the Way Huge Pork Loin. I have both on my board and really enjoy them. I use the Pork Loin for pretty much what I think you're describing. Just enough overdrive to sound like a pushed tube amp. I 'm generally not into crazy distortion.
The After Shock is very versatile pedal and can do that and more. More so than the Pork Loin IMHO. I have both because there are times I want that tone I described above and I use the After Shock to push more distortion on a couple of songs. What's cool about the After Shock is that there is an app where you can customize the tone with additional parameters available. Also, you can just download and use a whole library of these tones from the net through the app. Very, very cool.

Much more interesting. Not "must have now!" (for me) but still pretty nice. You have some pretty thoughtful designs. Much respect.
I'm watching this too. A few years ago when modding my Hammond organ with a tube preamp, I wanted something that would keep the spongy high end tube zing, but not make higher signal levels all crunchy (like low notes or chords). I figured I'd probably need some sort of limiter or crossover. For bass (especially fretless) I really do like my Blue Tube, but there are times I'd also like a clean low end with zinging tube-colored highs.
Well I kind of have a trio of them...
Cog 66 mini - it's my always on with touch of clean blend, bass on full, Treble on normal and gain on half... it's actually not got much gain but almost a preamp for big bass and low mid tones.
Damnation audio mbd1 - on softer setting with gain it can do overdrive, higher gain gets a crunchy distortion which is what I use. Clean blend and the depth knob will give you low end for days or tighten it up to be not so boomy
Aftershock - I tend to use this more for the muff / distortion type engines but do quite like the stock tube setting as a nice OD - with the blend and massive amount of eq options in the neuro app you could dial low end back into any engine pretty much. Or as one user even did as a template- filtered the engine and eq so that you have clean coming through with only a hint of distortion on the very high treble, almost a shimmer to a very clean tone. If you have time to dabble I think possibilities are endless.

Based on the specs stated in the headline I'd say EHX Bass Soul Food. It's a great way to bring some life into a clean signal path, it's an always-on kind of pedal!
It doesn't do raging OD, distortion or fuzz, but that's not what I want from it. It does "old school pushed bass head meat and potato" kind of sound and it does it well! I like it a lot!

I have the Boss Bass Overdrive but I don't think it's what morgan138 is looking for in sound. The ODB-3 just never did it for me unfortunately... It had that high end "fizzy" sound that I just didn't like unless I killed the highs on the EQ section... I ended up with the Darkglass B3K which I love but also not what morgan is looking for as that is a "modern" sounding OD.
I don't know too many people who look down on boss as they are pretty much an industry standard when it comes to effects. Probably 99% of us has had a boss pedal at some point. Either way, I like them since they are built like tanks and they get the job done.
But speaking of Boss they did come out recently with a new "Bass Driver" pedal. I believe its a bass overdrive/preamp. For $160 new it sounds pretty good from this demo. I have never tried it but it maybe what you are looking for. >
