Modern "Country"

I can say that I have a pretty good perspective on it, because, growing up, my parents never listened to country, and I never really listened to it at all until very recently. So my opinions are not really influenced by the fact it is what I grew up listening to it. I pretty much discovered Vince Gill, Keith Whitley, Waylon Jennings, George Strait, George Jones, James Earl Conely, ect. at the same time that most of these modern guys were on the radio. A couple of years ago I heard Vince Gill's "Take Your Memory With You When You Go" on a TV show, and that is pretty much what got me into country. Even though before that I played a few country songs with my last band. There are a few good modern guys, Brad Paisley is extremely talented, but his songs still pander to this modern, simple minded, every song needs a gimmick style that is being produced today. Zac Brown Band has some very good songs, and they are great musicians.

Much like myself actually, though to contrast I never got into the older stuff much, but some of the new ones you just mentioned I really like. The gimmick style to me is the business aspect of it, one cannot make a living playing what will not sell, or at least sell well. I would much rather make a living playing some gimmicky music than starve working the time clock shift and play what I think is really good artistically speaking - I can always listen to whatever I want. But that is an entirely different topic and argument.

I am surprised at the gastric reflux-inducing qualities of some of this music.

I view Modern Country songs much like I view pop songs on the radio.

Some are thoughtful and worth the listen, most are drivel. That applies equally to country and pop, or country pop, which is what most of us don't much care for.

I'm an old fart, so I don't much listen to pop stations anymore, but I know and appreciate acts like Black Keys much more than folks like Robin Thicke (yeeeech).

Some country folks are brilliant songwriters, excellent musicians, and some are superficial, insipid, and downright boring.

I listen to The Highway a lot on Sirius/XM, and I know the songs and artists I'm going to listen to, and those I can just skip right on by.

People I listen to:
Brad Paisley
Keith Urban
Zac Brown Band
Dierks Bentley (some)
Carrie Underwood (guilty pleasure)
Tim McGraw (some)
Jason Aldean (just to listen to Tully, who's brilliant)
Eli Young Band
The Band Perry (some, they need more than 2 songs for radio to play)
Jake Owen

People that get the immediate heave-ho:
Florida Georgia Line
Darius Rucker
Eric Church
Luke Bryan
Colt Ford (really hate, can't sing, that's why he raps, he admits it)
Cole Swindell
Blake Shelton
Miranda Lambert
Little Big Town
Taylor Swift
Kacey Musgraves
Lee Brice (really hate)
Lady Antebellum (ever since they fired their old bass player, all their songs now sound the same)

We actually aline very closely in taste, I agree with those two lists a great deal, although some of Blake's work is pretty good, at least it always goes over in the bars in my experience.

I don't want to make this a thing, but:
1.) Irrelevant not "irrelvant". Phones and all major browsers have spell checking built in.
2.) "So you like dressing like an irrelvant slob? But, most people do these days." You just contradicted yourself. If most people, including faux cowboys, wear t-shirts and jeans, then it isn't irrelevant.
3.) If we get started on the list of things I do that offends people, we are going to be here a while. Look, if I say "I think cowboy hats are dumb" and someone responds "I don't think there dumb"; OK cool. Wear your damn hat. But if the response is "You better keep that to yourself or you'll get beat." Then I guarantee you, every single time, my response is going to be "@$& you and anyone that looks like you." If someone wants to puff up their chest and play macho man over something like headwear, then they need to examine their priorities a little. There are a lot of things to get offended about in life, put personal preference in hats ain't one of them.

Bottom line: If you like your hat, whatever, just don't expect me to like it or care how much you like it. I've never cared if other people like what I like, and frankly its a pretty good place to be. People straight up hate things I like; I am Jack's complete lack of caring.

1. Talk Bass editor does not have spell check. Jumping on a misspelling is just a BS way to make youself look better.
2. I didn't contradict myself. I said there are a lot of irrelevant slobs these days. I shouldn't have to couch you on reading comprehension.
3. I don't need a list. You are obviously a self indulged insecure person who has to denegrate others to feel good. I didn't say you would get beat. You really do need to read more carefully. It was originally intended as a jest, but because you don't understand what you read, you had to go postal about it.
Why do I need hats to offend me when I have you?

You can still be sucessful without every song having a gimmick. I would love to see Paisley write a few Vince Gill style songs. I saw a video of him covering Liza Jane and he killed it.

Little Big Town, at least before the pontoon craze (I haven't heard any of their new stuff) is actually good stuff. I saw them in concert in 2009 (free tickets) without having a clue who they were. I was blown away with their harmonies and vocals..4 amazing singers...loads of talent. Band was great too.

I saw them again in 2010, as a member of TalkBass is their bass player and he hooked me up with 4 free tickets at will call! Very cool guy.. talked to him after the show.

Agreed 100%, that is why I tried to emphasize "some" gimmicky music. I always think about Blind Melon, though not country, with that. They always thought they should have made it bigger, as I, but were always bummed that they're only really big hit was No Rain that was really produced to hit radio, which it did well. They were successful though, just not BIG.

I knew one Blake song before seeing him a couple weeks ago (again, free tickets lol). I thought he put on a great show.. I was surprised. He is actually pretty funny and sounded great. I'd go see him again.

As info, I am pretty much a music snob and hard to please. I listen to a lot of live albums from the early 70's mostly..

Coach not couch.
Denigrate not denedrate.
It's built into the browser not the editor.
Yes, I must be a self indulgent person. That's the only reasonable explanation. o_O

I'm done.

Just for the hell of it, here's a modern Brazilian country song about a pickup truck. A Dodge Ram, to be specific.

And one that I've done live several times. Europeans love it, I think it was a top 10 hit in the Netherlands a few years ago.

Aren't y'all glad modern American country has less accordion?

This is the part in the conversation where somebody says something about how the Eagles were classic rock, until the 80s and 90s when country music started sounding like the eagles and other classic rock bands.
The Eagles were the Eagles until they did a session after Wishbone Ash in Florida in the same studio.....

+1 to "Modern Country" = rock in a cowboy hat.

Modern Country is cool! Dierks Bentley has a lead player who is a little like Pete Townshend. Jason Aldean has a thick guitar sound where everything blends together real well. Also check out Kenny Chesney on Austin City Limits. There are Many Guitars and they all sound good. None are too bassey!
