Modern Player 2.0 basses are on fender.com

And some here like the idea of a version:
Made in USA
Something like an onboard Audere 3 bans EQ with a passive bypass (pups seem hot enough)

And some here like it passive. Keep it passive, for me, please. I don't want the extra expense of a preamp added to it.

Body shape is ok. Pick guard is ugly and useless. It's more just decoration than anything.

Since it's passive and appears to be top routed, I'd say the pickguard is extremely functional. And I personally think it looks pretty good. I'm glad they didn't try to make the body or the pickguard look "like" a P or J body or pickguard. And I'm glad it doesn't look exactly like the Tele p/g, either.

Fortunately for those that don't like it, it looks like the routing is minimal enough that maybe you can get a custom p/g done that still covers the routing, but that you like the look of.

Definitely not sure why a thread that was specifically about the new Dimension bass got merged into a thread that is general all about all of the new MP basses. There's a thread specific to the MP Jazz. Why isn't that merged into here, too?

That's interesting to me. The quality of Squier instruments (i.e. high) has left me feeling like, if it's made outside the U.S., then I really don't care where it's made. I would be just as interested in MIJ, MIK, MIC, as I would be in MIM. Not to imply that MIA is automatically excellent. My preference for MIA is jingoism, as I posted earlier, not an assumption of quality. So, for anything else, my personal opinion would be to not assume any specific level of quality and to evaluate each individual instrument on its own merits. So, MIM wouldn't mean any more to me than being made in any other country outside the U.S..

Why would MIM be more interesting to you than wherever these Dimensions are being made? (which we are ASSUMING are made in China?)

Not about quality. If I have a choice I prefer to spend my money on products made in countries that are not hostile to my interests.

I should have waited for my stuff in the classifieds to sell, but I couldn't. For someone with a lot of love for the Fender brand but also with a love for stingray-esque tone, this is a real dream come true. Now I don't have to keep trying to buy Ray34's and wishing it said Fender on the headstock.

I'm not going to defend allegations of ripping Ibanez/Music-man off. I don't think this is any where near as blatant of a rip off as people are making it out to be, and honestly, it's hard to do something that another bass company hasn't already done 90% of anyways. Even if they sat around in a board room and DID say "okay, let's rip off dat ATK/Stingray", I'd still be glad that they made this.

Yes, I'm a fanboiii. :hiding:

I wish I knew about the MP line, a few mouths ago. I own a MIA Jazz and really love it, but when I needed a back up bass I went with an Ibanez SR505 , it's not bad but I would have loved to check this line out.
I like the way this bass looks, for 500 bucks maybe I'll get another back up!

Largely agree - the ATK with classic Fender headstock is waaay appealing.

A good mod for that dimension bass is adding a strat style 5 position switch and replacing that rotary knob with a tone knob. That rotary switching is very confusing during a live show, it' easy to mess up by forgetting where it really is set. My guitarist has a PRS with a rotary switch and he states that it's much harder to jump between pickup combinations than on a strat.

Mmkay, so I got my dimension bass today. First off, I'm goi g to start this post off by saying that this bass is going back, mostly due to the fact that so ethereal, at some level, someone took it out of it's box and had a prolonged jam session (whilst wearing a belt buckle) with it. The back is way more scratched up than it should be.

I did, however, noodle around on it a bit. The bass is superbly set-up, just like every other Modern Player bass I've laid hands on, and prior to noticing the buckle rash, was visually stunning. Tonally, it has a good sound, a different sound, something that SHOULD continue to be part of the Fender line up. But...The Dimension bass unfortunately does not cop the Ray OR Atk tone. It definitely was not made to get close to the Ray sound like the Atk was, no one would confuse them in a mix. Beyond the basics of being a humbucker, the overall character on every setting of the rotary switch is different.

I believe a big part of this is that it suffers due to the lack of a preamp. It doesn't capture that big, powerful sound that the Ray gets and that the Atk comes close to. These things in mind, I will probably not be getting another one of these guys sent my way.

Now, let me clarify, the bass does sound good, great even. It just doesn't do what I was wanting it to do, which was get me in the Atk/Ray ballpark. Honestly, if you're a Fender fanboy like me, and covet a tone similar to this, I don't think there is a better option at this time than the Squier Mikey Way bass.

Once again, great bass, just wasn't my thing and some wanker at musiciansfriend had his way with it long before I got to it.

You don't have to have a preamp to get a big, powerful sound. My G&L L-2500 in passive mode gives just as big and powerful a sound as my Sterling 5 (and the StingRay 5 I sold 3 weeks ago).

As an aside (from the intent of this thread), can somebody explain to me why it seems to be so common for people to say things like the above (that a bass needs a preamp to sound big) or that a bass needs hotter pickups? I mean, if I am playing my Sterling, for example, and getting a huge sound out of it, and then I switch to my passive, fretless J, it's not as loud. So, I turn up the input gain on my amp a little bit and now my J is just as loud as my Sterling. Does it sound as "fat, meaty, and aggressive" as my Sterling? No. But, that seems to me to be the nature of a J bass versus a Sterling. The pickups sound different. They have a different tone. That doesn't mean (to me) that they need to be hotter or have a preamp installed to make them louder.
