As an aside (from the intent of this thread), can somebody explain to me why it seems to be so common for people to say things like the above (that a bass needs a preamp to sound big) or that a bass needs hotter pickups?

IMO, with this bass in particular, i would venture to guess that since there has already been so many comparisons to the stingray/atk that it has given some people the impression that it will sound simliar. when they get their hands on one and it doesn't sound like a stingray/atk (even though it looks like a rip-off of one/both) then it is a dissappointment due to it not living up to the expectations of "it looks like a (___), so it should sound like a (___)"

Mmkay, so I got my dimension bass today. First off, I'm goi g to start this post off by saying that this bass is going back, mostly due to the fact that so ethereal, at some level, someone took it out of it's box and had a prolonged jam session (whilst wearing a belt buckle) with it. The back is way more scratched up than it should be.

I did, however, noodle around on it a bit. The bass is superbly set-up, just like every other Modern Player bass I've laid hands on, and prior to noticing the buckle rash, was visually stunning. Tonally, it has a good sound, a different sound, something that SHOULD continue to be part of the Fender line up. But...The Dimension bass unfortunately does not cop the Ray OR Atk tone. It definitely was not made to get close to the Ray sound like the Atk was, no one would confuse them in a mix. Beyond the basics of being a humbucker, the overall character on every setting of the rotary switch is different.

I believe a big part of this is that it suffers due to the lack of a preamp. It doesn't capture that big, powerful sound that the Ray gets and that the Atk comes close to. These things in mind, I will probably not be getting another one of these guys sent my way.

Now, let me clarify, the bass does sound good, great even. It just doesn't do what I was wanting it to do, which was get me in the Atk/Ray ballpark. Honestly, if you're a Fender fanboy like me, and covet a tone similar to this, I don't think there is a better option at this time than the Squier Mikey Way bass.

Once again, great bass, just wasn't my thing and some wanker at musiciansfriend had his way with it long before I got to it.

Sorry to hear that man. I wish Fender did a real demo of the bass. I have no idea why they did it with overdrive.

The sad part is that it's incredibly difficult to find very many products that aren't MIC. I agree with your sentiment here.

My iPhone is MIC, my iPad is MIC, my MP Jazz Bass is MIC. I've gotten over it.

What would be interesting is the 5 position switch offering this (coils are numbered from bridge to neck):

3 only
parallel 2+3
parallel 1+2+3
series 2+3
series 1+2+3

One of the coils isn't a 'real' pickup iirc. I think it just works as a hum canceling coil or something like that. Or at least thats how the ATK worked.

received two days ago, by the shop Thomann, i live south of france.
Im very satisfy and impress of the quality of this bass for the price, fiability of all components ! sounds is amazing, a lot of possibilty with the new coil switch ! correct setup from factory, but i make more right the neck and down little strings, then also setup harmonic at the bridge. very silent signal, no noise, very punchy and grow sounds ! very hight output volume for a passive bass ! amazing ! hurry to buy one of it, before Fender increase prices if too much success of that serie lol !

How does the B string sound like? Can you compare it to another 5 string bass that you had the opportunity to play?

B string are again same as usual Fender 5 strings, but iv optimize it by setup perfectly the harmonic and height of the string, also the nut is not so good, i was forced to enlarge the space for B string, for a correct insertion in the nut.. and a better sound.

B string sound good and correct in fingers playing, but not so good in slap.. i think the 4 strings version of this bass its a excellent choice for someone who dont play 5 strings bass..

Does the pickguard line up properly with the control plate? this photo makes it looks like it doesn't on the right side.

Any neck dive?

I have a 4 string and the control plate/pickguard line up perfectly. There's zero neck dive on mine either, tried it with a few straps and it stays put with all of them.

Is the neck still the same profile as Fenders other 5 strings? Or is it slimmer? Thicker?

On the side, basically where the control plate is. Same place as you'd expect it to be on a 3-knob PJ bass.

Seems like they're damned if they do, damned if they don't! Either way, Fender always has their iconic P's and J's'. The occasional curve ball is nice though, I think. Most people won't buy them (myself included most of the time)- but it's interesting to see Fender take chances on instruments like the Dimension, Aerodyne, Urge, Performer, etc... Fender is fortunate to have a core line up that will sell and be profitable enough to make the occasional 'experiment' less of a risk to the company.

I'm considering a MP Jazz 2.0. I think all the tone options would be amazing. Also that bridge looks a lot like a Badass doesn't it? I am going to have to see how much they retail for. The first version was only $35 cdn
