I think I know what the OP is referring too as well. I watched a video documentary on Wyn basses, and one of the burl tops shown looked almost more rotten than "figured" to me.

Now a disclaimer. I wouldn't have mentioned the name of the luthier at all if I didn't think his basses are of the best quality. I'd almost kill for one myself. I just didn't love the look of that particular chunk of wood. Not his fault at all.
Also, if you haven't seen the documentary before, you should watch it. It's quite fascinating and fun to watch.
I've watched parts of this video a few times now and always stop after he demos different tone woods by dropping them on the floor.
The fact that all of them are different sizes and thicknesses makes this demo completely pointless, I think.
