Modulus Mob

OK Pete, got you man!

After about an hour or so of working on my Q5, I got the setup nearly perfect. I have decided to keep it after all. GAS is a KILLER, but sometimes you just have to look at what you have and be happy, and I am dammit!

Anyone who thinks a Modulus never needs a truss rod adjustment should think again. I gave mine a good clockwise turn this weekend and OH BABY, I'm in love all over again!

Hah! I knew this would be the outcome!

OK, stop teasing us.

I really wish my Q6 TBX had a truss rod. It's going to need a refret and planing of the fingerboard to make it right.

Me neither :)

My buddies! They are a killer band.

Hey man, I got to hang out with the guys before & (mostly) after our gig. They were all way cool to us. I had a few beers with Chris- together we talked about jazz bases, my Modulus bases, Roscoe bases etc. Cool guy. We have a few mutual friends & we were both frequent visitors of G Guitars in New Haven, CT before they closed shop. I bought my first Roscoe there in 2009.

Kung Fu loved the Cape & their whiskey!

Bummer about your TBX. I was disappointed in my last Q5 which had no truss rod, I said never again. A TBX is a different animal though, I'm sure it will be worth the work to get it right!

Actually, the bolt ons are pretty easy to deal with in this respect. I have a 1990 Q6 that easily has the most playable neck I've ever had. When going to different string gauges or types, a little neck shim takes care of everything.

I'm a little curious if it's possible to add a truss rod to an older model. I guess the channel has to be molded into the neck.

My TBX isn't terrible, it's quite good in fact. So close that it's a frustrating that it's not perfect.

Just wanted to take a minute to thank edwinhurwitz and basswave for their suggestions on that 'other' now closed Modulus thread. I'll have to find a Status to check out and also look into Gould and Dorsch's basses. Also saw that Perman is now making basses under his name too so I have four options since I can no longer get a custom Mod and I just can't bring myself to 'ruin' a pre-existing used Mod. Thanks again!

There's definitely some great options out there. Just a point of clarification regarding Joe Perman basses - that through body fretless he made for Oteil was completed over two years ago, and to my knowledge, is the only bass he's made under his own name. That said, I'd love to see him start taking orders.

Up till today I didn't even know he made anything outside of Modulus. Hope he does get off the ground though, give us other options to try and fill the void. :/

Finally got some sunshine and had an opportunity to take a few photos of the Q5s together for the first time

My modest collection, from the left:

1994 Quantum 5 Dragonburst (Blue to Green) w/Bartolinis
1997 Quantum 5 Wide (21.5mm) Sweetspot Bluestone w/Lane Poor
2008 Quantum 5 Amber w/Nordstrands/Aguilar OBP3, Chechen board
2008 Quantum 5 Wide (19mm) Natural Satin w/Bartolinis

Each one is different from the other three. The Bart-equipped Qs are deep and warm, somewhat dark, with a smooth vintage tone. The Nordstrand/Aguilar-equipped Q is much more modern, bright, and upper-mid present. Loves to be driven from the bridge pickup. The Lane Poor seems to have the widest useable range. Bright but never harsh, warm but never muddy.

The pre-truss rod necks are noticeably thinner than the later truss rod necks.

The standard Q5 has a nut width of 1.85", 24th fret width of 2.75", and string spacing of 17mm at the bridge.
The QW5-19 is 1.90", 3.0", and 19.0mm.
The QW5-21 is 2.00", 3.25, and 21.5mm.

Sweet collection. Dudes, I don't want to jinx myself but I may be acquiring a 25th Anniversary Q5 for a song (Note- Does anyone have any experience with these models because the neck feels much thinner than my 2004 Q5?). I like a thinner, flatter radius hence my 3 Roscoes.

Very pumped. I will let y'all know if the deal goes down.

But, enough abut me - love your collection & thanks for posting.

Hey all fellow Mod heads I have been wanting a lefty Modulus for literally decades. Well I finally have one not the color I imagined or thought of but I had to have it. DC40s and a 2 band EMG preamp of some sort don't know yet just got her yesterday. It's a 98 so no truss rod but neck seems fine and stable. I can't wait to run her through an amp tomorrow. So here's a pic of one far out one of a kind lefty Modulus...Can I join?

My honey burst on quilted maple Q5 SPi Custom. Bought direct from Modulus, received in Jan. -96.
It has the original EMG pickups but a U-Retro that I put in. There's some serious low end in this bass.
I believe this is the bass I've held on to the longest, and it's not going anywhere ...

Beautiful basses, all!
Can't wait to hear more about the 25th Anniversary. It would surprise me if the neck was a different profile. I've only seen photos showing the special fingerboard inlay and model designation on the back of the peg head.
Nice lefty! Can't be too many of these around.
What does the designation "Q5 SPi" stand for? That is a beautiful finish, for sure!

I have a lot of paperwork and also marketing broschures from when I bought the bass, but I have not been able to find out what SPi stands for. Q5 = Quantum 5-string. Custom = built to specification, my choice of wood, color, electronics etc.

Here's a very similar special order Quantum from the same era as yours

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f126/1994-modulus-quantum-4-special-order-mint-condition-$1595-shipped-1011746/

Not an SPi, though!

Please post pics of the marketing material and such that you have. We'd be interested.
