Modulus Mob

You mixed an Alembic preamp with Bartolini pickups?

I have custom Alembic pickups/pre in my Quantum and love the extended low end I can get. I decided to go with simple electronics and selected the same pre that comes with the bass activator pickups. I find the ability to change the resonant peak of the pickups to be much more useful on stage than having a lot of tone controls.

Sweet looking bass, by the way...

Thanks to all of you for commenting on the beauty of my bass. She is a stunner. I bought it from Bass Northwest. It was pictured on their website and I immediately bought it.

Re: Alembic/bart pups. I have done this to at least 4 basses and has worked out perfectly every time. I have found, over many years, that the low-pass filters in cranked position yield a sort of a magical vibe. I use them that way most of the time (except in "Jaco" mode where I use the neck pup knob to warm up the tone), all EQ at the amp. This is the "S.Clarke" version without switches.

Love my bass!!!!!

What an amazing bass! The unique features have to make this instrument one of one.
Congratulations!
What is the f hole design?

The F hole design is "25" for the 25th anniversary (you have to tilt your head to the side to read this example!). Pretty neat.

I will try and measure the radius on both of my Q5's and get the dimensions.

Modulus closing was bad timing, because the I just snuck a Q6 out in time had convinced me to get another Q5.

You know, the demise of Modulus is very sad to me, very sad. I have lusted after then obtained a Q5 in 2004 and never looked back. I love solid, hi-fi sounding basses that are easy to play with incredibly low action (see my Modulus and Roscoe collection), that are truly works of art. I am hopeful the company is sold to a soild person or group of people that will honor their awesome tradition and carry the torch.

That being said, when it came time for me to obtain another Q5 this week I never faltered, even with the "unknown future". These basses are solid and I would buy another one (FU5 or 4) if I wasn't married with a family! I really hope they stay "in business" in some capacity and I believe they will.

Now, back to your regular programs........

I agree. I really wanted to buy a new Q5 that I could just keep at home. I bought my Q5 about 2004 or 2005...it is a 1996. I love it. When I figure out how to steal that 25th Annoversary I will have 2. I don't even gig anymore....I just hang out at the house and play. I will hopefully start gigging again in a year or so when I finish school.

Hey everyone,

I have a Q5 modulus (1999). I currently have the original EMG active pickups in the bass. I haven't been thrilled with the tone of late, and I was looking to upgrade to a different set of pickups.

I'm looking for a punchy but full sound…similar to a Mike Gordon/Phil Lesh type thing. I play through a GK700 RBII with a 115 RBH and 2x10 (fender). There are a lot of good things said about bartolini pickups, and I know they are an option to upgrade on Modulus....which ones would I want to consider specifically? Are the newer standard EMG pickups any good?

Thanks.
Dave

Which EMGs do you have? Phil and Mike have played the DC model, although Phil has been using Q-tuners of late. He also had some custom EMGs for a while. But Barts would be a move away from their tone. You might look into an Eden head, Phil made extensive use of the Enhance knob, as did Mike for a while. A cheap way to get into that would the the DI box they have, which you could use in front of your GK.

Don't forget the pick!

Mike also uses D'addario half rounds on his Modulus so that would add to his sound.

As has Phil in the past. My understanding is that he's using Ritter flats right now.

But, flatwounds or modified round wounds (ground or compressed, etc.) are a big part of the sound. Regular round wounds don't really provide that punchy tone.

Always thought he was using Ken Smith Slicks. The purple silk is a huge hint, unless Ritter has the same. Very interesting to know the strings have changed (at least some). I totally had the impression that Mike had found "them" and never strayed.

Shows what I know!

What DI are you referring to, Edwin?
