I remember when those bridges hit the scene. I thought they were kind of cool, but beyond my financial reach. They were available as original equipment on a number of boutique basses.

They still make them, just look up 2tek bridges. You'd have to get the bass custom routed to fit it, so you'd want to take it to a very competent luthier. But it is one helluva great design, I'm kinda surprised they aren't more common.

After listening more carefully to my bass I can now hear that the buzzing sound comes from the bridge! What a relief! So now, I need to look at the bridge. It's funny how the bridge always have been a problem - when I first got my bass the saddle for the G-string was sharp and cut the string. It also kind of makes more sense now why the buzz got worse when I adjusted the intonation...! It's a Badass II bridge. The saddles are set so high that the bottom hanging thing on the saddles doesn't sit in the slot. I am at least glad that the neck isn't faulty!

Chicago Music Exchange had a Q5 with a 2Tek when I stopped by over the weekend. They bumped it on Reverb though and looks like it's gone...

MOVIE MODULUS SIGHTING!



Starting at around 1:08 into the film The Upside of Anger, the bassist in the wedding band is playing a Q5. Burgundy with gold hardware. I know...I'm a nerd.

I don't actually think they are that heavy. Although mine is the earlier model with the smaller back plate, the one on that lovely q5 looks to be the newer version with the bigger back plate. From what I've gathered the later version is a tad heavier but doesn't have a noticeable sound difference from the old one. Mine doesn't really seem too bad for weight, the bass balances perfectly and it can't possibly be over 9 lbs. Feels very solid. Although my bridge has been altered over the years: I. E. Ground down on one of the saddle holsters to accommodate for the necessary far-back intonation setting. The black finish had worn off so badly that it looked like dirt/tarnish, so I took it apart and sanded all the bits to get the finish to a nice silver shine. Eh, it's crusty looking but it still works great and has lots of "mojo!"

2TEK bridges were offered as an option from the Modulus factory, in 1996 anyways. Not sure how many people wanted them.

Lol, yea, as I said, you do need to route out a considerable portion of the body.

IMO the benefit is the thru-body construction makes your whole bass resonate a lot more and improves sustain noticeably. The tone is outstanding. And the fact that each string is supported by an individual post or "finger" as they call it, separates their vibrations which enhances individual note clarity. Chords also sound extra crisp and piano-like.

Is it necessary? No. Do modulus basses really NEED it? Probably not... Is it really cool to have one already pre-installed on a quantum? Heck to the yea! It makes it respond really differently (in a good way) making a nice bass even nicer. IMO...

But I wouldn't probably ever go have one installed in a modulus that didn't already have one. Just too big of a mod to trust someone not to mess up.

That being said, I love my quantum and wouldn't swap the bridge out for anything else, even if it was possible.

Another benefit is that the string is longer giving the perceived feel of greater tension due to the length. Therefore it would be a perceived feeling of a tighter or less floppy B string (if your bass has 5 strings or more)

Ah... Well I'm not a 5 guy. But I could totally see that.

On the other hand, my E string has a pretty slack feel to it. Could be that I use lo-riders. Could be that the bridge doesn't increase perceived tension because the tension points are still between the same distance of the saddle and the nut. I ride really really low action though and that can make your strings feel a lot looser/stretchy,so maybe that's it.
