Hey all! I have a beautiful 1995 Q5 I got from a TBer last month, I was hoping to get some help on figuring out what the tone knobs specifically do. Total noob here on these controls, I'm coming from a Jazz Bass!

I'm going for a bassier/reggae tone, I'm already favoring the neck pickup that is giving me a lot of bass and super impressed with how it's sounding. But I'm not too sure what the stacked knobs do. I seem to be losing a bit of volume on the D and G strings as I have it right now, which is just flat.

isn't that the q5 bassman had for sale? if so, he did mention that it's an emg bqc system (vol/pan/concentric bass-treble/concentric mids).

Genesis 5 on the 'bay- not mine. If it had J pickups, I'd be preparing my explanation to the boss on why I need another bass...

Also an overpriced OHSC... also, not mine...

A 2002 with Bart Soap's in it!! Nice. I hate my G5 with the Jazz Pickups. Just makes the bass totally look like a Jazz copy. Even though mine has Red Cedar neck and body, I just hate those pickups.. Just my opinion.. I do like the Top wood on that one on the bay. Alder neck though and White Cedar (soma) body.. In his description he lists it as having J Pickups too. Guess he copied the wrong catalog item
EDIT - That Maple Board thows everything into space on it.. Love it

Describe?? What happened? The boards on TBX's usually are Ebony and not Phenolic. At least I thought. I know my pre-TBX neck thru has a Phenolic board, but it seems to me that it might be the exception and not the rule

I thought maybe it was rosewood because jerry dorsch had maybe mentioned that but as I went to clean it i noticed that it basically has no pores but it does have a very slight "grain" pattern if you will. compared to my other Q5 which is definitely phenolic, there is definitely a difference

Really? Based on all the ones I've seen -- which admittedly is only a handful, and were all early models (pre-reissue) -- I would have wagered just the opposite was true, that phenolic was the norm. Modulus didn't even start using wood fingerboards until what, the mid-1990s?

Ah, earlier than I thought for wood fb.

And yeah, if all the Modulus enthusiasts and ex-employees put their heads together to piece together an accurate timeline of the company I'll bet it would make for a commercially viable coffee table book!

Also, I have been contemplating a full refin and refret on my tbx but damn its not cheap

If I could get the darn stacked knob off and replaced with the new one I would post a proper photo with the all black hardware


Question: I replaced the schaller bridge with an identical black one and now there is a rattle when i hit the open a string with some force....cant seem to place where its happening on the bridge...any ideas on how to remedy>?

Would love to help with someone compiling a complete history of Modulus basses. Guitars would be a bit easier, but basses were made to order and were highly customizable. Not much was standard in the very early years (say mid 1970's thru Mid 1980's) everything was up in the air. Especially with all the Bassstar's, Alembic's and on and on
