if i can chime in:

g.c. does have a 30-day return policy on used instruments. i checked on that when i bought a bass and amp online thru them. so you shouldn't have any issues bringing this back to your local g.c.

my '92 q5 also has different sized barts. neck p/u is 35mm wide and the bridge p/u is 31mm wide. never thought much of it. was contemplating putting a bart mm5 in the bridge. maybe a definite now to honor the passing of louis johnson and the hours i spent as a teen playing and rewinding my vhs copy of his instructional video where he performed on his mm stingray.

Just talked to the GC I bought it from. Turns out it was a return from another store. They had only put it up on their shelf after they took it as a return. Hmmm. Talked to the manager who is trying to figure this out. Maybe a big discount may make it worth taking to my luthier for saving!!

Hello Modulus experts!
I have a Flea/FU4 (silver metallic, Seymour Duncan Basslines MM pickup and Aguilar OBP-1 preamp). I got it new in the UK in Dec 2013. I think it was the last new one sold in the country.
The ser.no. Is 060368, now the question: was this built in 2006? Therefore is it classed as a Funk Unlimited I assume that they are only Flea if they have the logo on the headstock?

Any ideas?

Many fans of the Flea bass but not many owners....
Update - bass came from Sherman Oaks, CA.. Store manager said he can't sell me the bass for less. He also told me it was priced at fair market value even with a cracked body and chunked out neck.. He told me that playability was user preference too. Ha.. I laughed at him. Bass is being returned to Elk Grove Village, IL on Sunday. Please be aware, this Quilt Top 1992 Modulus will show back up on GC for sale.

If it doesn't say Flea on the headstock then it is a FU (Funk Unlimited) bass, if it says Flea on the headstock it's a Flea bass.

This blows my mind. I order stuff on GC on and off. Sometimes it's in great shape. I got a Dr. Z Carmen Ghia gtr amp that was incredible. Looked brand new and was 10yrs old. But, I also bought a pedal once that didn't work at all. Seems like they need to work on inspections a little. I know on the rare occasion I trade something there, they basically glance at it and make sure it makes sound and that's it.

Nice to see a serial number that's easy to decipher. It's a great bass but I have to try and sell it as I lost my job (there's been a recession in the UK). Plus I do have a '97 FB4 so one has to go really.

Does anyone know how many FBs or FUs were built?

PS - I wish some sort of database would be developed and we could have some sort of timeline for these. Problem is that much of the earliest years, they did not use serial numbers. I have 3 of them prior to 1985 that do not have serial numbers on them

Hi Modulus players,

quick question for those with first hand experience regarding tone woods (alder body vs. alder body with maple top).

I could get a used Quantum 5 (which are pretty rare over here) with an alder body (Bart pickups, 3 band EQ). I had 2 Quantums in the past (Bart pickups, 3 band EQ), both with alder body + maple top, so I'm familiar with that tone.
What can I expect in terms of sound differences between all alder body and alder body with maple top???

For the record:
I have a Boerjes 4 string with alder body + maple top and it sounds fantastic, quick, snappy, very punchy and cuts through anything, not super warm though.
The same bass with all alder body sounds warmer, less super fast, less punchy, a tad more vintage like.

I personally own an alder bodied Quantum and several maple-capped Quantums, too. My opinion is that, while there is a difference in tone imparted by a maple or other exotic wood top vs solid alder (as you described), that a Q5 with Barts will sound like a Q5 with Barts, and that the top wood is more a cosmetic feature.
Oh, and my solid alder Q is REALLY light, which feels great to me.
