Modulus Mob

Here's my Quantum 4 fretless:

IMG_1668.jpg

Now stringed with Sadowsky nickel roundwounds. The best playing neck of all the basses I've played so far. I love this bass so much that I've been playing it exclusively ever since I got it 3 weeks ago, and this is my first fretless.

That bass is either a 94 or 95

Can you tell me what does the serial number on the back start with.

It has the Bartolini GG pickups which was done over a year.
They have a bit of bit to them more so then the standard Barts.

Those ones are a bit rare, one way you can tell is that the pickups are not the same size the back one is a little smaller (narrow).

Keep that sucker...

Thanks! I've seen nicer Qs but mine does have a nice look. I like the Mod logo on the neck. I don't think I've ever seen that on another bass.
Looks don't matter all <that> much to me. I mean I wouldn't buy a pink bass but this thing came pre-dinged and I was happy. It means I don't have to worry about putting the 1st ding in it. What matters is the sound and this thing sounds incredible. It has the most solid fundamental bass tone I've ever heard and it stands out in a mix very well. I understand why Mods are called sterile but I actually like the sound. I do crank up the preamp on my Eden to get a little more dirt than normal. The fretless mwaaaah is not that great on it's own but when you crank the mids in the preamp it comes out. This is my first fretless and I'm considering ripping all the frets out of my other bass which is a Fender P.

EDIT: The Sound: Sliding from the Low C to the Low D on the B string is worth the price of admission alone! Does it sound warm and fluffy? NO. It sounds like 2 pieces of steel being ground together. DEVASTATING low end.

Looks like I am about #15.
Modulus Q5 about 2001. Spalted maple on alder.
Tricked out with all Alembic electronics with Q filters.
Love it beyond all things!!

The serial # start with 92, so I guess this is a 1992 model?

Funny I didn't notice the difference in the pickups size before :). One thing I'm not sure about this bass though is the preamp. I assume it's a 2 band Bartolini but would you know what preamps were installed on this model? I want to try out 3 band preamps so I just ordered an Aguilar OBP3 to install on this bass.

That should be a 3 band with a switch.
Its looks like the same as mine.

Its not a standard 3 band (from what I'm told) its was a combination of Bill Bartolini and Geoff Gould.

They worked together to come up with a combination that was just available for Moduluses. Your serial number surprises me but its entirely possible, that configuration was mostly done (again from my information) around 94 and 95.

Why are you changing it?
Don't like the tone?

Joined the mob this past weekend. Picked up a Flea Bass 5 from Guitar Center at a very nice price. My first real bass was a graphite necked Steinberger XM. I've missed the graphite neck since I've sold it.

Anyways, great bass. I'll post pics tonight, but it's a standard black 5 string with the gray pearloid pickguard.
