Modulus Mob

Heya Mod Mob! I have a 2009 4-string Flea Bass with the stock Seymour Duncan pickup.

I'm thinking of replacing the SD with a Lane Poor legacy -- did anyone here do it? If so, how did you find the change?

I found this video on YouTube that does an A/B, but it sounds pretty distorted due to the recording... From what I can hear the LP has a bit more bite and (more importantly for my tastes) a more 3D low end.

I know it's hard to describe tonal changes, but if you have any info, please post. Thanks!

Hey there! I did the change and I love the bass even more now. I would say the LP pushes the bass more in the "Flea" direction. Not that the Seymour Duncan doesn't sound the way you would expect a Flea Bass to sound (aggressive, gnarly) but in my optionion the LP adds even more punch to the sound, which I like a lot. My bass has the OBP-1 preamp and I also experimented a bit with the pickup height. I probably have the LP a bit closer to the strings than I had the SD, which might also add to the more "direct" tone. Fresh strings probably also did their bit ;)

All in all I would definitely recommend the change!

It has been queit here as of late....

I am debating getting the Modulus Genesis 5 on the 'bay. It's a little more than I want to pay, but it is in mint condition and has the OHSC. Would prefer a flame top, but that quilt is very nice.

Question. I have Sweetspot 5 with a EMG DC and was looking to get more tonal options. I just got a EMG P5 and thought of putting that in the sweetspot and installing the DC in the bridge -turbo position. Anyone try this? Also Thought of doing it the other way around with the P by the bridge. Thoughts? Experience?

My 94 was born as a SS. It has Barts in the standard neck/bridge position now. Someone prior to me did it. Ballin had a turbo, so he could answer this much better. I know that I love my Q5 and as much as I would not advocate hacking up a Moddy, mine was already done and it is a killer tone monster

Heya Mod Mob! I got the same question: I'm itching to drop a SD 1/4-lbr P-bass pickup into the front of me '09 Flea, but as @iriegnome said, the thought of hacking up my Mod makes me queasy!

The turbo position will give you more range within the really nasal/burpy/growly range, like a jazz bridge pickup. But that is only "so" useful. I think you'll get better use out of putting one in the neck position, like a precision/jazz neck pickup. You will get more usable tones out of that.

Well i got outbid by 2 different people in the last 20 seconds of the auction, so the hunt continues...

Hey guys, any idea about how much a refinish would run me? Part of the reason I got my Moddy for so cheap last year was that it's kinda in rough shape, and I'd really love to have that crystal clear neck finish that I see so much of on here. I'd probably be able to do some touch ups on the body myself, but the neck is a different story.

Years ago, about 10, I sent my neck to Jerry Dorsch at Graphite Guitar Systems to have it refinished when I was getting the run around from Modulus. It turned out like new and was really quick. I can't remember the price but I do recall thinking it was very reasonable. Here's an email to try, if he's still doing that sort of thing. I think that he was one of the original people at Modulus.
