Modulus Mob

Apparently so... either that or Modulus magically went out of style. I have a Genesis fretless 5 listed for $900 shipped with no interest! *** is up with that?
I am still shocked that no one has bought either of your instruments. W T F indeed.

We should rename to
"The awesome sounding, great playing bass that no one wants to buy"
:scowl:

Well that settles it. I almost sold my thumb B.O., but opted to put new pickups and preamp in it instead; now she is my main axe. Looks like my modulus is gonna get the same treatment. I am thinking Nordstrand DC's with an Audere Z-mode.

Now to pick which bank to heist :ninja:

here is a 30 year old Bassstar P bass. i recently replaced
the pickups with Dimarzio model P & model J
dig the rosewood fingerboard! plays & sounds killer

On the flip side, I can't find a Q4 to save my life...or a VJ4...there were several on eBay in the $1,000 range and now that I want one....nothing.

There's at least one on eBay right now, not in the $1000 range though... the guy selling most of them, "equipmant" I think, snags up the cheap ones quick, puts new strings on them and marks them way up. I think you should just go for a nice Genesis lined fretless 5 :D

Yeah, i feel like emailing that guy and just breaking it down for him. That purple Modulus has been on eBay for at least 5 months at $1495. I wouldn't pay $750 for that one...I think it looks horrible.

I did email him about another one of his auctions. He offers a three day return option if an instrument isn't as described. He does not offer a return if you simply don't like the instrument or it's condition. All sales are final he said. There was too much room for interpretation there. I mean, come on, these are used instruments. The boutique retailers offer a no-questions-asked return on new instruments. I decided to pass. He seemed to be a nice person except for the fact that his keyboard doesn't appear to have a shift key.

I notice that someone just sold a very nice Q6 here over the weekend for $1450.00 - and very quickly too.

I've been watching mod's on ebay for a long time. That dude, equipmant, has a TON of mods and other gear. Check out his photobucket account...mega Mod droolage....

he has amazing patience that q4 w/midi has been on there forever.

couple real nice Qs on the ;bay today.

There was Q5 on ebay that went for $1,147.00 in a no-reserve auction two days ago. It was a blue/green burst over flame maple, only a couple of years old and in really, really nice looking shape. That appears to be reality - not the questionable stuff that sits there week after week and month after month.

As for the "Modulus Market", I think everything is soft right now. And I'll be the first to admit that like my MTD, a Moddy isn't for everyone which in a questionable used market, makes them a tough sell. Fenders and the wannabe ilk will always move b/c they're an easy flop- kinda like a lady of the night situation... ;) And you won't take as much a hit buying used and then selling used.
GOOD Mods hardly ever come up F/S, so a lot of us buy new or happen magically upon an excellent used piece, so the depreciation factor is nutso.

I have like $1000 to my name BUT I still have my FB4 J/MM, and HOPEFULLY will be keeping it, no matter the cost! But this '85 Spector NS-2 I just bought officially cleaned me out... However, the FB4 is just an excellent instrument and so versatile with the J+MM pickups and 3-band EQ. Fave Flea I've ever had, including the original '97 model w/ the LP pickup and 2-band pre. Was even in Sparkle Black!

Everything is soft. I have seen some STUPID deals on Moduli, and everything else, but ... I'm not throwing the $ down and neither is the majority of the population.
Now is the time when people get super rich. Prices are super low but they will rise eventually. if you have the cash, and the balls to wait 10 - 20 years, you can make boatloads of money.

Exactly.
This is how I even HAPPENED upon my "new" NS-2. I haven't seen a Brooklyn-era Spector F/S in a long, long time, especially one that's desirable, has had no mods, and is in excellent shape for a 25 y/o instrument.

It is a crazy market for Mods right now....I thought I got a good deal on my Modulus when I bought it a few years back but now they are selling for about $400 less for a used one....which is great if you are in the market for a Q5.

But the Q4s are still more expensive than the Q5s or the Q6s...which is crazy.

I'm checking out a Modulus Q5 with chechen board, barts and the bart 3-way preamp. I dig it in many many ways, but I'm not entirely satisified with the tone. Historically I've not favored the bartolini pickups as I find them kind of "compressed" sounding, although that characteristic probably blends well with the native sound of the Q5.

I've searched talkbass and found some entries discussing the Aguilar OPB-3 preamp as an alternative to the Bart NTMB, but am hoping for more -- or more recent -- input on this question. Anyone out there replaced one with the other or played the two side by side, and in a position to flesh out their thoughts on the difference in sound?

Thanks!
