2007 Modulus Quantum Q5 5 String Bass -KOA TOP- | GuitarChimp

Hey guys,

So I've got a Modulus Quantum V. Beautiful bass. I bought it used, so I don't know the exact history of what it's been through. Was made in '08.

Question about the control layout (knobs). It seems to go Volume, Pick-Up Selection, Mids, Bass and Treble (stacked). My questions are:
a) Is that correct?
b) For some reason when I turn my mids down, I lose a lot of volume. Is that supposed to happen? I thought the only thing that would affect volume would be the actual volume knob.
c) Sometimes when I'm adjusting my knobs, I get a slight crackling/hum through the amp. Could there be something wrong with the electronics? Pick-up issue perhaps? I also have that issue where if I touch my laptop, or some other electronic while the bass is live, I get an intense buzz. Is this a shielding issue or something? How do I fix this?

Thanks,
Mike

Do you have EMG pickups?

If so the mids is also a stacked knob?

The crackling noise could only dirty pots, you can use Deox-It to clean them, it is ab easy fix. If you are using EMG, shielding is not recommended, however if you are using Bartolini it will be better to check all ground connections.

I have Bartolinis! My mids are not stacked. Just a single knob.
I've been thinking about putting EMG's in. Would you guys recommend that? Is there a particular model I should be using?

Thanks,
Mike

I much prefer my EMG's to the Barts. IMHO, the Barts are way to dark.. Unscrew your pickups and see what they are. Should be some sort of model number on them. Also, in the control cavity, you can see what your Preamp is. Some have a small switch for the Mid-Boost range. My Bart pre's have the 250/800 (IIRC) push pull knob. And yes, it does affect the volume to a big extent on mine

Will do, thank you. Is there a particular model number for your EMG's? Can you provide a link?
Thanks

I differ from the other people, I do not like the EMGs, so I will be replacing Preamp and Pickups with Nordstrand Preamp and Nordstrand BigRigs, in my case, EMGs sound limited/compressed for the tone I'm used to, I feel the BigRigs will fit right for the Modulus and will be able to expand the sonic capabilities of that bass haha.
Currently, mine has EMG 40CS and BQC System.

Yes. Yes I would. Best modern/ growl rock tone from ANY bass.
Musicman not withstanding. Graphite/ maple combination helps sustain.
No cavity shield. If my neck were fretless it would be the best jazz tone lol.
Not a big fan of Barts.

I have been playing my Quantum 5 for close to 30 years now. Not sure if it is due to the the neck through body desisn or they all sound like mine but I find the graphite neck to contribute a slightly compressed tone to the bass. I do not dislike that but don't think it is from the pickups since it is clearly audible to me if I play the instrument unplugged with my ear against the body. IMO the compressed sound contributes to the punch you get from a Modulus. Mine came with Barts that I immediately replaced with Alembic pickups since I have never liked the sound of Bartolini pickups. I have played Modulus basses with EMGs and would prefer those over the Barts any day. My bass really came to life when I swapped the pickups and the EMGs also open up the sound plus they have a nice midrange punch which is especially beneficial when playing rock music.

Could you provide a link to the Alembic pickups you're using? I'm interested in swapping out the barts for EMG's, but I'd definitely consider Alembic if you'd recommend them!

No link to provide other than to a picture of the bass. I have one of the Quantum basses that came with three pickups and had custom pickups made at Alembic. I am not sure if any of their stock Activator bass pickups are direct replacements for your Bartolini pups. They will make custom pickup shapes and sizes, though. Call Mica at Alembic between 11AM and 4PM PST for more info... 707 523-2611. When I bought my Modulus in 1988 I called Geoff and Alembic before I bought the bass to make sure I could get Alembic pickups for it. Geoff had already given Alembic the molds at some point but as far as I know had never had them make any pickups for him. Initially I had the simple Activator circuit with only a volume and low pass filter. Recently I decided to give the bass an early 30th birthday gift and had Alembic go over the electronics, fix one of the pickup selector switches (they replaced them all), add a 0-+3dB-+9db Q-switch to the low-pass filter and add bass and treble controls. The bass and treble pots have a flat position with variable boost or cut. Very happy with the updated electronics, lots more tonal control.

Wow, that's a beautiful bass. Where is Alembic based? I wonder if I can have them do some similar work for my Modulus. Looks excellent.
