Modulus Mob

Yes, Kevin Brown is my nephew, and a great drummer! Small world indeed! He also plays in a band called the Show Ponies. [note: of course, if it was made after 1995, I was no longer at Modulus, but it's a nice story nonetheless!]

It's a 1997 so yeah, but you definitely had a hand in my 1993 Q5. You even answered the phone when when my shop (The Fret House) called the order in.

not necessarily. Sounds like you might have bass/treble controls? They can work with Barts. In fact, there was a period when we used EMG EQ with Bart pickups.
Thanks. Maybe I'll start there. I was considering a bart, and a three band EQ, with the stacked knobs. I really want to make the Modulus my #1 because...well...but in active country, my Pushic with bart quads makes the right sound.

Finally my new pickups for the upgrade are here, I still need to fix up the cavity of the Q5 and do the shielding, I believe I will complete the swap of pickups and preamp for the end of the week, will try to make sound samples.

Nordstrand BigRigs with Nordstrand 3 band preamp, will keep the same knobs configuration but will add and active/passive switch.

So today i noticed the neck on my Fb4 def moved. The open D especially is buzzy and seems to be too close to the neck; the G a little too.

Been a little chilly lately and today we got more typical florida weather, so im guessing this caused it? My apartment isnt climate controlled so that may influence it too. Should i be worried? Is this a neck adjustment thing or just raise the saddles a little?

I have EMGs in my Q5 and they are a lot brighter than the Barts. I like the warmth of the barts over them.

I will have to agree with you @micgtr71
I did a quick test with one of the BigRigs and the EMGs are way too bright compared. I found Barts and BigRigs to be more usable. But off course, depends on the tone you like and the music you play.
I do understand Geoff selection for that time, and for the sound on that time made totally sense. But is not the sound I like and a I do like the playability of the Q5, now with the new pickups, guess I will love it :)
I hope to finish the swap tomorrow.

I’ve got EMG’s on my Quantum 4. I play mostly in Jazz ensembles, both band a choir, and they can be rather bright. I personally can deal with it by playing farther up the neck, sometimes at or above the twelfth fret. And by increasing the bass setting.
Seems to be less noticeable in a choir setting. Still, I’ve thought about changing pickups on occasion. Decided I like the way it sounds stock, though.

I really want my Q4 to be my go-to bass, everything is right about it except I find the EMG's to be too bright, and not as warm as my basses with Barts.
Here's the question tho- I can EQ it they way I like, but something in the back of my mind says that's too much EQ, I usually only use EQ to fix room/stage problems.
Why won't my own experience/prejudices just let me turn the bass up almost full, and back off some mid hi's?
The consumer in me says replacing the p/u's and the pre ($600) is better than turning some knobs (FREE!)

That sounds pretty extreme. EMGs in a Q can be very bright but that's why I prefer very old roundwounds and some bass boost (2 band) on mine.

I run my EMG equipped Q5 through a trace head into 2 410's at pretty much flat. Tweeters in the cabinets off. Gives me solid low-end, mid-range growl, little high end. Dean Markley blue steel strings which I haven't changed in Forever. The knobs and EQ settings are there for a reason. The Musicman requires a different setting. No two bases sound the same in different rooms or stages or styles of music. Otherwise you could be replaced with a Bass track...

Keep in mind that there are quite a few different models of EMG pickups, too. You most likely have 35DCs in yours now (you can look on the bottom of the pickup, should be a sticker there). DCs are the brightest model. I think you'd probably be happier with one of their "CS" varieties. The "CS" designation means the pickup has a ceramic magnet loaded with steel poles, which tames the highs and warms up the tone quite a bit.

Around when your bass was built EMG soapbars only came in P, J, and dual coil. But now there's a bunch of different ones available - Invalid Link Removed

And if they’re the quick connectors, they are a cinch to swap out. I personally dig the EMGs in mine (40DCs) and wouldn’t characterize them as bright, but I also have a 40P and 2 40Js to experiment with as well.

I am rejoining the modulus mob after several years away from music in general. I was shocked to see the prices of the flea basses and assumed I would never own another one. I got a pretty great deal on reverb on this one shortly after it was posted.....I just happened to do a search, saw it and figured why not. 1997, said to be all original....though I see a stack pot which I am not sure if it could be OE. Also has a badass 2 and the original modulus logoed lane poor pickup. Unfortunately it was sent out late.....and is now sitting in a frozen UPS trailer for the third day straight due to it being shipped out late and the Christmas holidays. I made several trips to a couple different UPS hubs to try to rescue it from that torture to no avail. I am a bit nervous about this one being in temperatures as low as 10 degrees by the time the trailer gets unloaded. Wish me luck.
