Modulus Mob

Captain Pedantic says: They're both "Quantums" it's just that the neck-thru model is the "Quantum TBX".

Pretty sure "Quantum" originally referred to the body shape/style with that gracefully elongated upper horn. Lord knows there have been close to a dozen Quantum variants over the years, some neck-thru, most bolt-on (and some bolt-ons with the Integrated Neck Joint, others with a traditional Fender-style heel & neck plate). But all Quantums.

This has been covered before, but Quantum was the name I gave to the first 35" scale basses. The first Q6TB was very narrow, 2.5" at 24th fret. Different bolt-on models evolved: Quantum 5SP, SPX, then SPi, which is what the current bolt-on Quantum was originally called. I'm sure it's been posted around here before.

And to the person from Chicago looking to try a 5-string, the Chicago Bass Club has one of my walnut over ash 5-strings in stock. Same basic beast as the Q5SPi, but .25" wider at the 24th fret.

Hey Mob,

Looking to change up my strings. Been using DR steels (either hi beams, lo riders or fat beams) for awhile now, but looking for something new on a Q5.

Anyways, I’m looking at D’addario nickels (both xl’s and nyxl’s) and wondering from you cats that use them- do i need the extra long scale, or do the regular long scales work all right?

Try a set of these , best strings I have found in a long time !

Sigh... although I finally got my Aguilar DCB pickups in today, so now to get them installed and see how an all Aggie set up sounds... hopefully like this

I’ve got Barts and an OBP3 in my Q6. I think my “happy place” would be right between my all EMG Q5 and my BART/Aggie Q6. That video you posted seems to sit in that space. I may have to land some new pups for the Q6.

Please give me your honest assessment of the Aguilars when you're done. I used them once, and the bass didn't sell in the store until they were swapped out for EMG's. I have a set w/preamp waiting in a box for someone who asks for them...
Wow, no pressure :D

May be a bit, as I have to get them installed (I'm a TERRIBLE solderer), will call Carl Pedigo of Lakland fame/infamy tomorrow and see what he says. I got the prewired OBP-3 when BestBassGear.com had their last 10% off sale, so shouldn't be too difficult... also got it wired with an active/passive push pull, which I like just in case the batteries go... and for a different option.

That being said, I liked my previous Q5 with EMG's and the 2 band EMG pre, just couldn't get the 3 band to fit in the cavity.

Personally I love the Aguilar set up. Had it in my tbx and it is really warm and rounded. Doesn't have the snarkiness of the Emgs but I also think that is what most like. I am more of a thump lover instead

I have the same setup in my Q6. Quad coil barts, the reverse pbass in the neck pickup with a full humbucker bridge is perfect for me.

In the old days, the world was basically divided between EMG and Bartolini. It would be interesting to hear the difference between Bartolini and Aguilar. I'm just too small a maker to have extra basses sitting around very long to play with.

Myself, and any owner of a Modulus Flea/Funk, have an Aguilar OBP-1 preamp in the guitar. I haven't played with their p/us, but the OBP-1 is a great sounding pre.

Not accurate. I have have a FB4 and FB5 and neither came with Aguilar components.

My FB4 has a 2 band Bartolini preamp and originally came with a Bart pickup. It wears the Duncan pickup now.

The FB5 has a 3 band Bartolini preamp and originally came with the Duncan pickup. It now has a Legacy Lane Poor pickup.

My understanding is the Duncan was supposed to be a replica of the Lane Poor.

It was, but I have both and they are noticeably different. The LP is more transparent and it growls like nothing I’ve ever played. The highs are much smoother overall and are easier to dial in. The Duncan gets harsh much faster and and it lacks that ultra clean growl. It was a nice attempt by them to get Modulus through the LP drought, but they are just not the same. It’s a great thing Legacy Pickups brought them back to life!

swapped one of my '91 Q6s from EMG to full Bart setup. As it was full EMG, it did not have a factory route for the bridge ground. Other that just drilling away, can you advise on where the factory route would have been?
