Modulus Mob

has anyone tried thomastik infeld strings on your modulus?

been a dyed-in-the-wool user of dr sunbeams for years but wanted to try something new for ish-and-giggles.

or do you have a favorite set you'd like to recommend?

specs i'm keeping in mind:
* 35" scale (duh! :laugh:)
* light-gauge (.40-.120 or somewhere near there)
* nickel or a low-tension metal (not a big fan of stainless steel - not enough 'give' when plucking)

thanks!

I’ve used Powerbass on my FB4 and FB5, but on the 5 the B string was trash. Played like a rubber band. However, the other strings are fantastic and “power” definitely lives up to the name. They are super powerful and they project immensely, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Stefan Lessard from DMB used them on his Flea’s and it was a large part of his live tone when he used those basses. Very even tone and when you dig in, they growl right back at you.

saw those but don't think they offered them in extra-long scale / long scale plus.

funny that they use a modulus quantum as their 'bass of choice' on their packaging tho...

I tried the TI jazz rounds on my TBX 5 and I didn’t care for them at all. I ordered two separate packs and both had dead sounding E and A strings.

Great! Plenty of string. I checked with the guys at Planet Bass, and they said to go with the 34" as the 36" strings were WAY too long. The wrap starts a bit below the B/C tuners (so, well above the nut). I'd post a picture, but I'm out of town at the moment.

ah, interesting... guess i'll find out the hard way when the strings arrive, no? o_O:confused:

in any case, i sent an email to a rep at ti, asking them their recommendations for a 35" scale bass.

hope to hear from them in a day or two.

Hi, guys,

Well, I just wanted to check in here, and become part of the Mob with what I consider my “once in a lifetime, dream come true” bass.

I know this 1996 Q6 Sweet Spot Turbo has been around on TB before, and I’m now the proud new owner :)

But wait…

There’s more!!!

The next to last owner swapped out the EMG’s and Demeter pre for Bartolini Classic Bass dual-coil pickups with a 3-way coil-tap switch for each pickup (series, parallel, bridge-coil only). They’re connected to an Aguilar OBP-3 18v preamp with push/pull volume for active/passive selection, blend, push/pull mids for low mids and high mids selection, and stacked treble/bass.

But I’ve saved the best for last…

Back in June of this year, the previous owner sent it back to Modulus via the Music Zoo, and had the bass converted to FRETLESS! The neck was totally redone, and everything with the setup was optimized at the factory, so it’s like a brand new, fresh of the line bass that’s 22 years old!

I’m pretty sure that what started out as a pretty rare Q6 Sweet Spot Turbo (With a 2Tek bridge!!!) is now pretty much unique…

I’m really more or less speechless as how everything I ever could have wanted or dreamed about has come together in this one bass.

I’ve always wanted a Modulus, and once I could afford one, it was never in the cards, and over the years I’ve missed out on a few that looked like they would have really made me happy. Last year I had talked to Moses about a graphite replacement neck, and when I went to look them up a few weeks ago, it seems like they’re out of that now, so I felt like I missed another opportunity. I had even looked into an epoxy/Jaco fingerboard mod for my #1 fretless…

Then this Q6 came along…

Again, I really don’t know what to say, other than how happy I am that everything I could have ever dreamed about in a “perfect bass” happened to all come together, and at a time when I was able to purchase it.

Here are some links to another TB threads that links back to the original Music Zoo page which is still up, as well as additional pics.

I think everyone should try out a Modulus. The Quantum5 is my absolute
favorite out of all my collection. There are of course several that if the opportunity
and funds coincided I'd gladly add on, but Q5 is the one I keep picking up and loving
the pu growl, neck, feel, looks. Seen a lot of fantastic TB TBX's that may GAS me up one day.

Wow, that's a stunning axe! I'm pretty sure I've gushed over it in the past when someone else owned it, but just so there's no doubt:

A Sweet Spot Turbo with a 2Tek bridge already sounds like a killer combination, but man, that electronics package really kicks it up a notch! I'll bet that thing sounds amazing.

I love the color too. Enjoy. Play the hell out of it.

Thanks, Bob!

I still can't believe I landed this one - It's really The One that I always dreamed of.

anybody have any issues with the CITES program?

will be in the toronto area in the spring for a wedding and will be doing my share of gear hunting.

i'm just concerned that if i buy a bass with a rosewood fretboard off of craigslist/kijiji and try to cross the border at niagra falls, the bass gets confiscated.

@GeoffGould , when you ship your basses to japan, is it required to submit documentation on the particular woods that you used for the basses being sold abroad?

any help is appreciated...

I had to stop a shipment to Japan because of this. You can still move across borders, but you may run into a lot of paperwork. I'm trying to transition all new basses to phenolic fingerboards, plastic position markers, and renewable woods like maple/walnut/ash/alder, etc. I will still make cocabola-topped basses (they are so wonderful) but people will have to be severely counseled before buying one!
