Modulus Mob

anybody have any issues with the CITES program?
I will still make cocabola-topped basses (they are so wonderful) but people will have to be severely counseled before buying one!

One of the reasons I bought a second Modulus 6-string -- and a solid black one at that -- is because I have an upcoming Eastern European tour and didn't want to risk losing my 1988 cocabola-topped Quantum to bureaucrats.

Speaking of the black 6-string...

Anyone know what kind of bridge this is? Is that an ABM? Bass is a 1996 if that helps.

Warning: Dumb Quantum 6 string compatibility questions ahead: :banghead:

Does anyone here use either

Elixir Nanoweb Coated 6 String Bass Strings Medium Long 32-135

on their 35" instruments?

I'm assuming regular long-scale DR's fit since DR doesn't seem to offer an extra-long option.

I'm a little more confused about the Elixirs, since they do offer an extra-long option, but not in that particular 6 string set, so I'd have to add two singles to the extra-long 4-string set.

I've used DR Sunbeams and Hi Beams on my Quantums, no problem. Hi Beams, Lo Riders, and Fat Beams on my Genesis, no problem.

Personally, with DR, I've always felt there was a bit of imbalance between the B string and the rest of the set, regardless of Hi Beam, Sunbeam, etc. Always found the B string a bit darker. This is a lot better if you get a 4 string set and get a bigger B string than they include in their 5 string sets. Most recently I'd go with one of their light 4 string sets with a .135 B. Larger gauge strings tend to have more harmonics, so this brightens the B up enough to balance better.

I've currently got Fodera SS on all of them, their standard "heavy B" set which has a .130 B. Really like these strings. Superbly balanced tone all the way across the set. Best B string I've ever tried. They're round core like Hi Beams/Sunbeams, but they're a bit stiffer than Hi Beams. They are a little more expensive, but very worth it IMO.

Don't know about Elixir. I tried them once a long time ago when they first came out, and the coating became a shredded mess with maybe 8 hours playing time. I've heard they've fixed that with a much improved coating, though.

Thank you. I appreciate the additional info. I am indeed thinking about a heavier (135) B, which is one of the reasons I was looking at Elixirs.

I use DR's on my 5-string (Alembic Essence), so I know DR's will work sonically and feel-wise. I haven't noticed a great disparity with the B string in the DR sets I've used, although I have noticed that with some other brands.

The other reason I'm considering Elixirs is that I hate changing strings, so anything that gets me a few more months is worth considering.

I probably am not looking at anything in the stainless steel realm (although I have indeed heard great things about Fodera's), at least not for this bass. My sonic "target-territory" for this bass is warm, round, full - not necessarily bright.
