Modulus Mob

does anyone use chromes on their q5? I love them on my alembic epic 4. I cant deal with round wounds, just much to bright for me. I love the chromes bc theyre mellow and still slap well. I tried pressurewounds but didnt like them, and TI jazz flats are to slinky. Chromes would be my go to, just curious as to what experiences you guys have had

As far as tone is concerned and condition, longest lasting best sounding strings I've ever used for the past 20 years on the Q5. No fret where whatsoever. Not too stiff nor too floppy. Great B string response. On the Q5 able to play faster than on any other Bass I own. From experience the best combination I can imagine.

I have used Markley Blue Steels on my Quantum Five for 30 years now. Started using the Blue Steel Nickel a couple of years ago, they have a mellower sound than the steel but you still get a nice bite. I did get a set of chromes recently but put them on my Alembic Series I. So far I like the flats but not sure I like the way the chromes are gauged, the B string seems overly heavy to me. I was tempted to try the chromes on my Quantum bass but I am so used to, and happy with, the Blue Steels on that bass.

If you put chromes on your newly acquired Modulus let us know how you like them on that bass.

you sure? jason from BSO said most people get super longs, idk who to believe lol

I can confirm that both of my Modulus Quantums take regular Long strings. The only 35" scale basses I own that require Extra Long strings are the Rob Allen MB-2 and the Lakland 55-02D, both of which are rear-loaded.

Try the GHS brite flats

Same strings as Ken smith slickrounds

I have Smith Slickrounds on one of my fretless basses (not a Modulus), and I absolutely love them for that application. Based on the way people describe D'Addario Chromes, I can see why the Slickrounds would be a viable alternative: They have the stiffness/high tension, and they have a very sweet clear treble without being bright at all.

I use chromes on my Jazz Bass, I believe. Only changed them once, and they were what the shop recommended, so I’m not completely sure if that was they were.

Regardless, I prefer warmer, less “aggressive” sounds myself.

I used Blue Steel strings on a short scale Sammick PJ bass that I had a year or two ago. If I remember correctly, they started out rather bright, but the most extreme parts of it quickly went away, and left you with a more mellow sound than you’d first expect.

I haven’t used those strings in a few years, but they were good strings. I’m thinking I might put Chromes on my Q4 next time I change them. Might try Blue Steels, too, as they aren’t that expensive.

I wouldn’t recommend Ernie Ball Super Slinkies on a Modulus. I’m pretty sure that’s what the local shop put on it when I had them do a set up and string change a couple of months ago, and they just sound way too... much.
