Modulus Mob

I liked Chromes on my Q6 with Barts and OBP3. I did not like them on my Q5 with EMGs. FWIW They sounded rich warm and full on the Q6 but sterile and dead on my Q5. YMMV

I have way more first-hand experience with EMGs than with Bartolinis, so take this with a huge grain of salt, but fwiw that's been my consistent impression of EMGs vs Barts regardless of what strings or what basses: Barts invariably sound "rich warm and full" compared to the EMGs which...while I wouldn't call them "dead" can comes across as a bit "sterile" or at least "neutral almost to a fault"

I agree completely. Those particular strings didn’t work for me with the EMGs but nickel rounds are the money for me.
The Barts and Aguilar rig is warm and rich almost to a fault in my opinion. I need really aggressive string sound to cut in a rock mix with that bass (read stainless steel). However, it’s magic in a solo or acoustic duo/trio setting with more mellow strings. I’m really wanting to try some tape wound strings on it for that purpose.

My experience with EMG's initially reflects a friends Frankenstrat years ago that had
two, going into a Mesa (which helped). Was the hottest guitar sound I'd ever heard
so when I purchased my Q5 I selected EMG's on that alone. Whether it's the Graphite neck,
or Maple body- I don't know, but it has the best in your face growl which I assumed EMG's
were known for. I've often heard other similar accolades. I can get a smooth J single coil or
round deep P tone with an eq adjust but it's best "modern/ rock" tone I've heard. More .02 salt.
More props to DM Blue Steel's?

so mob have a few questions as I await the arrival of my q5 monday.

any special set up tips for quantums? Im confident in setting up most basses just wondering if theres anything special to do with a carbon fiber necked instrument?

Anyone wanna trade black modulus tuners and hipshot 17mm spacing bridge for chrome ones? Id like to black out all the hardware. Would love to do it when I change the strings so to get it all set up in one foul swwop

From the Quantum owner’s manual pdf I found through the google machine

String height:
Quantum 5: 6/64” measured from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the “B” string, 5/64” measured from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the “E” string and 4/64” from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the “G” string.

Pickup height:
EMG and Bartolini Pickups
Height adjustment is accomplished by means of two Phillips head screws located at the outside edges of each pickup. Raise the pickup by turning the screws counter-clockwise. Clockwise adjustment of the screws lowers the pickup. Standard height at the factory is 1/8” from the top of the pickup cover to the bottom edge of the string (depressed at the 24th fret) for the back pickup (pickup nearest to the bridge) and 5/32” from the top of the pickup cover to the bottom edge of the string (depressed at the 24th fret) for the front pickup (pickup nearest to the fingerboard). Pickup height for SweetSpot models: Use height specs for front pickup.

Neck relief:
Neck Relief Adjustment
Neck relief on Quantum basses is set at the factory to accommodate most playing techniques and string gauges. Though the Quantum composite neck is able to resist many times the tension of a standard set of strings, we have provided a relief adjusting system to allow for personalized setup of your bass. The Modulus system provides for two-way adjustment (over- and under-bow).
Turning the adjuster clockwise will move the center of the fingerboard closer to the strings. Turning the adjuster counter-clockwise will move the center of the fingerboard farther away from the strings. Use the provided hex wrench to make relief adjustments. Access to the truss rod adjuster is through the open hole beyond the highest fret and above the Modulus logo. There is a center “dead” spot you will feel when the system is at its neutral point between overbow and underbow adjusting ranges. We recommend having this adjustment made by an authorized Modulus dealer or qualified repairperson .

In regards to the dead spot in the truss rod/neck relief system- it’s surpisinglly big, but just do gradual adjustments and you’ll get though it. I am not a luthier or a tech, but I have done it on 2 modulus and a status bass, so just take it easy and slow and you should be good.

I heard there was a really cool silver sparkle flea bass just listed on the classifieds.

(Full disclosure-I'm selling it. Is this kind of post allowed here?)
I would think as long you’re a supporting member and not trying to skirt any of the classifeds rules, it’s all good...

I have thought about doing some minimalism myself, but then I’d have to stay out of the classifieds and off reverb and ebay... :D GLWTS!

Also, please let us/me know if you decide to sell the Q5 next to it ;)

hey guys, notice much difference between the hipshot aluminum or brass bridges? what do you prefer?
I can’t say I noticed a sonic difference, but the 19mm bridges in my parts drawer have an almost 6oz weight difference (the brass being heavier)

Shes here. Even prettier in person!! Quick pic at the office!

Still looking for a black
Hipshot a bridhe at 17’mm!

Yup, black would be optimal, but chrome is not at all a bad look
on that one either. Least until you can decide on a proper ABM
or whatever bridge and tuners. Mine did many gigs with gold
hardware till I got the wild hair and ordered black including the
input plate from Modulus, which was still around at the time.

Definitely a keeper- treat it with TLC. Cymbals and other
bass players are a liability. Mojo is for daily drivers. A ding
on an expensive Modulus will break your heart. Develop the habit
of taking a quick glance around you before moving on a cramped stage.
You'll thank me later.
