Modulus Mob

heheh... just join us and have mr. gould build you one. currently a six-month wait. quite a plethora of options to pick and choose from. plus, even as busy as he can get, geoff has been gracious with his time online when questions or comments arise...
Thanks & that would be amazing. I don't make enough to afford a legit quiver of high end basses but I do love my Modulus VJ4 w/ EMG's in them as it's my main bass. I was wanting a Modulus since 1991 & finally pulled the trigger around 5 years ago & I don't think I could ever sell/trade her. But I'm stoked for you guys being able to put in your custom orders & can't wait to see them here on TB, cheers!

I'm running my Quantum tuned ADGCF (so half a step higher than yours) and I was running a .110 without touching the nut and it was fine. I eventually went up to a .120 and it needed modification though.

I'm running a .168/.110/.082/.061/.045 on my Q5 SS in GDGCF. Had to open up the nut on the lowest two, only a smidg on the D string though.

Here's the notes from my tech on measurements pre set up for the cables that are on it now. I wanted the beefer to be set up to play as buttery as before.

My control cover had seen better days (purchased with two broken screws and eventually one of the spots stripped out so he came up something and 3D printed it and will be held on with neo magnets.

Stock measurements: Moddy stock strings measurements
.127 / .099/ .080/ .065 / .047 (prototype SIT nickel)

At octave:
Action low string .1
High string .09
Relief low .03

Relief high .04

New string gages:

.168 / .110 / .082 / .061 / .045 (Kalium hybrid balanced drop)

Bridge drilled perfectly! Only needed to open it like .02. 3/16 cobalt drill.

Steel Fret mask and a dremel with wool pad and jewelers rouge. Frets polished, all metal cleaned up. On to the mag cover and 18v mod. I also made a shorted battery snap for converting back to 9v.

Rendering of control plate:

Here is a rendering of the magnet holders being printed that will hold 6 mm x 3 mm neos to firmly secure the new control cover.

DUDE, finally worked through queue and started looking over the Moddy. This thing plays… amazing and is officially the least fussy instrument I've ever setup. A joy to setup. It's def one of the rare times I've picked up an instrument to play and it instantly wowed me on first noodle. Feels amazing dialed into exact same action measurements. Intonation was even super close after string/tuning change, which means you nailed the tuning/gauge ratio. And I say that VERY rarely, being jaded setting up so many instruments, not much excites you, haha. Man, nice bass.

My tech said they are willing to share Vector and or 3d files if anyone is interested.

For me this mod is functional and will look nice. My tech also repaired the stripped and broken screws holes to allow for use of stock control plate.

Huge thanks to my buddy Jerry of Satyrnine Amplification. Love you man!

I'll update finished project.

Hey Mob... I have been asked by my guitar player to list his 1992 Q5 SS (M-92 I believe). It is in fantastic shape and is a beast! Not an option for me to hold it, so I will be putting out to the group here first. OHSC, plays well. Pic's this afternoon. Going to put it in the classified section unless someone here wants to know more. I will have some sound clips as soon as I can cut up the audio from last night. Shoot me a message

Would love to see it. Interested but not sure I need another Q5 SS. Mine is a 1995 SPi SS just like your silver burst without the mod.

My 94 Silverbust is actually having another mod done to it. Since the SS pickup was removed WAY before I bought the bass, I am having a 3rd pickup put into the route that is already there. It will be tied to the neck pickup, but it will be a triple pickup SS!! Kind of funny.
Anyway, I will post pics later today. Just got too busy during my lunch today.

It is a 1992.. Case is pretty typical of this era of the molded plastic cases.

Oh, I hate doing this.. Here is an audio clip of this monster in use. We practiced last night and I did my best to play all over up and down the neck and every type of playing I could think of. At one point, I am using a pick. I actually try to slap for a second (ugh I am terrible at it). But here you go. Oh, this is 18 minutes into a 23 minute version of Mighty Quinn - Grateful Dead style.

Anyone have any insight on the dip switches on the EMG pre amp? I've read it effects the bass, I've also read it effects the treble. I assume different combinations of on/off render different results. I could mess with it and listen, but figured I'd get an idea here first. The bass is a 95 Q5 SPI SS with EMG pickup and pre amp. I assume based on the wired connections this is the original pre amp. I'm assuming this is also the BQC pre amp from all my reading (this bass is set up 3 knows, stacked bass and treble, stacked mid and sweep, volume). The board says BQA but from what I read all the boards say that.

Anyway, any insight would be greatly helpful. I'm adding pics.

This is the diagram from EMG website for the BQC system on what the dip switches do if this helps:

Hello!

I've been playing my modulus q5 for over 20 years at this point. I've never come across one that has the same color...anyone else have a teal quilted maple modulus?
Great to see you in this thread! I just want to say you have been playing great in the new gig. I have only ever seen one other teal quilt Mod. Very nice bass.

When I lived in Boston back like 20 years ago, I ended up trading an Eden amp I had for a mid nineties Q5 that was previously owned by Steve Buslowe who I hadnt heard of at the time but I guess he was the bass player for Celine Dion and Meatloaf. That was a great bass but its long gone now.
