Modulus Mob

no pics, no bass, no number! Looking forward to seeing it!

I won't be able to take any photos of it soon, since I don't have a camera... not even in my (old) cell phone. Would you believe that?

a Q6 that is *not* bright?! Those strings are flats, dead rounds or something is broken.

As I said, probably needs a strings change, although my Warwick sounds brighter with strings of the same type and age.

Hi my name is Pete and I have major GAS for a Q5...
Thing is I think I want the wood fingerboard (chechen) rather than phenolic, for feel as well as a mellower attack. I'd appreciate any wood fingerboard owners opinions regarding any real difference, Thanks.

I have (and love) both. My Q6 has chechen and my Q5 is phenolic. The wood board does seem to change the overall tone slightly, but I would hesitate to say it's 'better' - just different. And it does feel different, of course. To me, the phenolic board is actually very comfortable once you get used to it and I'm a huge wood fan. Something else to consider - a wood board can be effected by changes in humidity. My prior Q6, which also had a wood fingerboard, got dry enough at my previous home (shame on me) to actually shrink enough so you could start to feel the fret ends. Thankfully, humidifying it brought it right back, but that isn't anything you would worry about with the phenolic.

Hiyo fellow Mobbers! Here is my two-tone sunburst FB4 I got in 2008. I didn't really like the pearloid white pickguard so I spray-painted it black.
I have changed the Basslines pickup to a LP since these photos were taken. The LP is only slightly more "open" sounding (maybe a little less low mids) than the Basslines. I'll post some more pics with the new pup soon!

This bass sounds like a T-rex vomiting thunder (in the best way possible). :hyper:

Oh- Can I have a number please?

Cool Modulus! Welcome to the Mob, you're number 83.

I am anxiously awaitng delivery of a gorgeous 35" scale Modulus Q4. The original Bartolini pickups have been replaced (but are included) with a pair of Nordstand Dual Coils and it has the original 3-band Bartolini preamp. I have no experience with Nordstrands, other than what I have read on line. I was wondering if anyone out there has any input for me. What can I expect, tone-wise in this particular bass? I know tone is an entirely subjective thing. That said, how would these compare to the original Barts? Is the Bart preamp a good match? Will I want to switch back to the Barts? Just looking for any thoughts and opinions while I wait for this gem to arrive.

I would like to join the modulus mob please. Just bought a Q5 from a fellow TBer. Black on black sweet spot. lane poor pickup will be installed.

Show us your Modulus when it's done, and we'll get you a number!

Gotta love the LP's. :bassist:

Quick question. Is it okay to leave my modulus tuned to DADG for an extended period of time?

I don't see why not, are you worried about the reduced tension? I don't think it should have any effect. These are necks that went decades without truss rods, so the small reduction in tension between E and D shouldn't hurt IMHO.

I'm not an expert on Nordstrand pickups, but I have owned Moduli with Barts. I had a bass with big singles and it was a snarling beast, very aggressive sounding.

The Barts to some can sound muddy in the mid range frequencies, but this is sometimes balanced out by the relatively bright sound of a modulus neck and phenolic fingerboard.

The Nordstrands will likely sound more aggressive, clearer and open sounding. The Bart 3 band is one of my favorite preamps and I can't imagine it not agreeing with the Nordstrands, although I have no direct knowledge of that. I have owned several basses with that preamp and am currently using a Lull M5 with Duncans and the Bart pre.

As far as switching back to the Barts, that all depends on your tone goals. The Barts will probably sit well in a mix, but might need some tweaking from the pre to be heard in a dense mix. The Nordstrands will probably be more discernible in a busy mix with less tweaking. IMHO, IME and all that jazzzz.

BTW, 35" scale Q4 ??

Thanks for the response and yes my question was related to the reduced tension. Which is why out of my four basses, I decided to tune the E down on this one given the graphite neck and thought it would be able to handle the change, albeit small, without issue. Just wanted to get a second opinion, so thanks again.

Thank you so much for your input. That's great information. I know tone is all in the "ear of the beholder" but if what you say is true (I'm certainly not doubting you) then I think I will be very happy with the Nordstrands.
As far as the 35" scale, I doubt it will mean anything on a 4-string, tone-wise. This particular bass just happens to be a 35" scale. I wasn't particularly looking for that, and I am a little nervous about it. Im pretty adaptable though and my '77 Alembic Series 1 and my fretless '90 Warwick Thumb basses hang in such a way that the necks FEEL longer than my other basses (although they're not) and I have been able to adapt easily to them. Therefore I'm hoping not to have a problem adjusting to the 35" scale. Thanks again for your input.
