Modulus Mob

liam bass.jpg]

Modulus Q4 Black/Black #010552

I'm not an expert on Nordstrand pickups, but I have owned Moduli with Barts. I had a bass with big singles and it was a snarling beast, very aggressive sounding.

The Barts to some can sound muddy in the mid range frequencies, but this is sometimes balanced out by the relatively bright sound of a modulus neck and phenolic fingerboard.

The Nordstrands will likely sound more aggressive, clearer and open sounding. The Bart 3 band is one of my favorite preamps and I can't imagine it not agreeing with the Nordstrands, although I have no direct knowledge of that. I have owned several basses with that preamp and am currently using a Lull M5 with Duncans and the Bart pre.

As far as switching back to the Barts, that all depends on your tone goals. The Barts will probably sit well in a mix, but might need some tweaking from the pre to be heard in a dense mix. The Nordstrands will probably be more discernible in a busy mix with less tweaking. IMHO, IME and all that jazzzz.

BTW, 35" scale Q4 ??

As a owner of Barts and Nordstrands in Modulus bass and Nordstrands in just about all my other basses...I would say that lower mids on lower notes are bit more pillowy on the barts but not unclear at all.

In general when you compare Nordstrand's to other pickups like EMGs or SDG or some of the Delano's I would say IMHO that Nordstrand's are not uber aggressive. I find them very even, with a very defined midrange to lower mid register and have a little bit of the Aero influence in them (of what you put in is what you are getting out). So if you have harder technique in your plucking hand itg going to show more then Barts (IMHO) thats probably in part due to the detaild mid character.

This is not a slam against barts at all...I feel they are really good in getting the timber of the instrument better then most...I'm guessing this is why Mike Tobias uses them in his MTDs. Sometimes you might want lobster or sometimes steak :hiding:;)

* Preaching to the choir here disclaimer.

Had a gig last week in Harwich, MA (charity/ fundraiser for family on hard times), swank golf course with many folks (including some great looking women). 2 medium sets, outdoors in humid conditons. Chose my Modulus Q5 and it sounded fantastic. Actually got some great props from many of the guests on my sound.

[Geek info: Alder body w/ Quilted Maple top, pheolonic fb, Bart/Bart into Genz Benz SL 900 & Bergantino HS 410.]

Goes to show, the Mod always nails the gig. I love the Quantum and every now and then I need to be reminded of how great this bass really is. I have almost taken it for granted.

Like I said, preaching to the faithful!

Rock on Y'all! :bassist::bassist::bassist:

Hi All,
Just opened the box of my used Q6 yesterday, and here it is.

I would love to hear from anyone who went to different pickups from the standard EMGs, and what their opinions are. The previous owner of this bass (2 owners back, apparently) put in 45P+J pickups, which I'm not crazy about at all. Looking forward to hearing pickup impressions (and what style you find yourself playing the most).

Just got my first Modulus on Friday! It's a blue sparkle Flea Bass 4 string with Bart pups and a 3-band Bart pre. A lot of people on TB say you need to upgrade the pre to an Aguilar to make it really come alive - I find it hard to believe that this thing could sound any better

I've never been the kind of guy to join clubs based on gear, but I'm seriously considering joining the mob!

No pics, no bass. Someone had to say it :hiding:
Edit: and possibly, welcome!

Just curious about what mobbers are stringing their moduli with.

I've got Dean Markley SR2000s on my Q6...They taper over the saddles but are back to full size by the time they come close to the bridge pickup. They sound bright and snappy, and with the help of the neck pickup and a slight roll-on of the bass eq, sound nice and full with definition. FYI, my pickups are currently P/J EMG45s.

i have a q5 fretless w/barts and a bart 3 band pre w/mid switch.
I've used chromes, TI jazz flats, DR rounds (forget what they are) and have KSmith Compressors now.
I liked the chromes except for the G string's tightness. I loved the low tension of the TI's, the smoothess and the tone but did not like the low B all that much.
The DRs were awesome...I like Phil Lesh's pick/chunk tone. Kept them on for a while but went back to the TIs because I could not slide on the rounds comfortably. I tried for a good 8 months but there was too much drag.
The compressors are nice. they are smooth but still retain some of that round wound high end chunk. Kind of pointless to have a fretless when you don't want to slide on it.
helping me abandon the rounds was the purchase of a jazz bass. I have rounds on it and i get all the high end chunk my heart desires :D Not the same as the modulus which just KILLS for that aggressive up front CHUNK but good enough. I really need a fretted Q....alas....no one is giving them away.

I don't find my adjectives always match up with others but I made a set that to share if anyone is interested in hearing the alt pups in action.

I don't find the pups (ASB2-6/Duncan STC 3 band preamp) have all the grit I'd like but overall not bad and records great. Strong mids with this setup. Anyway, listen to the sampler for yourself if you'd like. I string selection in the description too if interested.

I have been using Fender SS Flats on my Modulus Q4. I like them a lot.

Well mobbers, I haven't had a Modulus in quite a while and I have no idea when I'll get another. Not that I don't want one, I'm just more than happy with my 2 basses ATM.

I'm looking for another member to take over maintenance of the list and handing out numbers. Who wants it? I'll post the member list so you can copy it and keep it, or I can email you a Word doc.
