Modulus Mob

I just got off the phone with Anderson from Modulus and let me tell you I am blown away by Modulus and their commitment to excellent customer service and quality. Had a few small issues with my Quantum 6 I wanted to get fixed. Within 2 days of leaving a message I received a call back and talked with Anderson for about 20 minutes about some questions I had regarding some other stuff. Very helpful and sounded more than happy to answer my questions and I received a return authorization code. Very professional to have that code for me after I left a message and before I got a call back. This company and their attitude towards their customers are a huge asset to the bass playing community.

I am VERY pleased with my experience with them. This kind of service keeps me coming back to their brand because I know if I have an issue I will be taken care of very well and they take pride in building world class basses.

Modulus is an amazing company :)

Just got a personalized email from them saying they are working on their customer service. It takes a lot for a company to admit it hasn't been the best but is now making customer service a priority.

Been using nothing but modulus for ten years and my loyalty is renewed :-)

Kudos Modulus!

Good news, I was just playing my Quantum and now after reading this will go back and noodle with a smile. No one wants to own an instrument they love and have second thoughts about the company who made it. We take pride in our instruments; I for one, love the US luthiers and want them to thrive. Kudos to Modulus if they are getting better at customer service. Here Here!:hyper:

+ 1. Glad to see them stepping it up. Way to go Modulus!

Hello Modulus fans,
I just got a 94 vj. I am verry concerned. The bridge seems off. the strings are not centred over the neck or the pickups, but rather skewed toward the treble side of the neck. quite noticeable. Also, does anyone know if these basses came with a neck plate? I disassembled it and saw that the neck had a shim on it as well, and there was no ground wire running to the bridge even though there was a hole for one. The bass came with EMG's which I assume is pretty normal for 90's models. Am i wrong to think this bass isnt kosher?

Sketchy. Mine don't have neck plates and I haven't seen one online with one either. Sounds like someone maybe tried to modify the bass without using the exact parts?

I've known people who have tacked on their own bridge - not being pros- and even being off center even a bit it makes the strings go across the neck all odd like.

A shimey on the neck? Does the neck have a truss rod or is it an older model?

Oh and if you can post pics that would rule!

Now, the bridge appears to not have been moved. the holes are all original. in the neck pocket, there is a hand written 4 digit number written in sharpie? it reads 4683. this is not like any build quality i have ever seen by modulus. also, no truss, older model. shimmed neck.

Misaligment is not uncommon with bolt on necks. You should be able to align it better when you put it back together. My 97 VJ came with a factory shim (wooden) and a neck plate, I've seen older VJs with neck plates. I'm guessing the EMGs were swapped in., they usually came with Barts.

EDIT: and FWIW, my 97 has those exact same hex head bolts

Good for you. Looks like Modulus has been reading through this thread....which does happen FYI.

Mr Gould/Modulus,
I contacted you a few weeks back about an older VJ. I took some photos and I would appreciate your input. The bass I received does not seem to match my memory of the high build quality that was my last quantum.

Something does not feel right about this instrument. In the neck pocket there is a hand written 4 digit code, 4683, written in sharpie. It does not appear to have anything to do with the serial. Also, the finish wasn't complete in the neck pocket. The neck was shimmed. As far as I can tell, the bridge mounting screw holes were all original, so the bridge does not appear to have been moved, just poorly installed. Lastly, there is a ground wire hole under the bridge, but no ground wire. That really struck me as odd. No shielding paint or foil either. I know EMG's are quiet, but I am pretty sure some shielding would have been applied back then.

Long story short, the seller had a 3 day return policy, and I sent it back. He offered me $200 to keep it. I think I dodged a bullet. Thanks again for entertaining my inquiries about old business.

Sincerely,
Derp

The response from Mr G. Gould
"Well, it does seem odd. The serial number would be from when I was there, but we didn’t do many of these retro things, nor did we have a literal VJ model then. Perhaps it’s just a kit bass? Someone got a neck, and built a bass? EMG’s are not normally shielded or bridge-grounded, so maybe this body used to be part of a different instrument?"

The response from Modulus
"Hello Derp,

You're right, it doesn't look like the same high-quality instrument that you come to expect from Modulus. It looks like the bridges mounted off center and there is a huge gap between the pickguard and the control plate.
Although I will admit that our standards of quality are much higher now than they were in 1994 when this instrument was built, it is possible that someone took a Modulus replacement neck and put it on someone else's jazz bass body. But I'm not sure if I'm answering your question. If you have any specific questions please let me know. You can email me directly at [email protected]

So there it is kiddies. Caveat Emptor. Luckily the seller had a 3 day return policy. Damn, now to find a confounded Modulus VJ!

I have talked with a few guys I know that work for various high end shops and they comb talkbass a lot to see how they are doing reputation wise. Its great to see companies really taking to heart what their customers have to say. I love seeing a company that is passionate about building high quality instruments and providing the best customer support they possibly can. They know if they keep their customers happy they will come back time and time again. Next time I go to buy a new bass Modulus is high on my list and will continue to be if they keep up this great service. Sorry I sound like a fan boy but I am thrilled to see companies actually caring now. Gives us musicians piece of mind.

Hmmm... I wonder if this has anything to do with Modulus contacting me the day after I posted (March 20th) about not hearing from them for weeks after I sent a VJ back in for a neck swap.

Still waiting to hear from them again, but that was expected as Anderson said it would be about two more weeks last he wrote. Hoping I'll have a brand spanking new stealth fretless VJ soon. :hyper:
