Modulus Mob

Lots of heat is usually what does in a graphite neck finish ... If it ever got left in a hot car etc ...

It would have to be left in there for a while thought...but this is correct.

Modulus service sucks - there is no service

Well, I have had crappy service and decent service on the same instrument that I bought new and still own- Q5. Like Rossiman, my neck has a white "chip" that developed in a mysterious fashion. Anyone on TB who knows me knows I take excellent care of my (very expensive) instruments; I don't lean them on sharp or abrasive objects, etc.. I called the store where I bought the bass and he told me to contact Modulus directly. After about 4 emails and several phone calls where I left messages that were never returned, I was given another person's email address and he did reply. I was told I could send the neck to California and they could re-spray it for about $500.00. I decided to live with the bass and it has not gotten worse since (2 years now). It is a catch 22 because I really love the bass and have zero desire to sell it, but I like having people call me back after I spend over $3,500 on a bass they make.

Bright Side- I hear things are getting much better; they now have a FB page and more visibility in the market which very well may = better customer service.

If you know it's just a blend pot - swap it ... Don't take it in

After paying a tech often a used preamp self installed will cost less

I'm not trying to start an argument with you, but if he had the skill to replace it himself, it is likely he would have been able to diagnose the problem to begin with.

BTW new blend pot at my tech = $35. A new OBP-3 in the classifieds here will run you $100 minimum and likely unwired at that price. Add around another $100 to install depending on options.

I went to college for audio engineering so I'm pretty good at trouble shooting. That said, I've assembled plenty of XLR cables over the years but futzing around inside my brand new bass with a soldering iron scares that bajeezus out of me. I'd much rather have someone do the repair who does this all the time. Would it make sense to contact Aguilar with this issue? Thanks again!

Spoke too soon. I just got an email from Joe Perman at Modulus. He suggests talking to Tony at Planet Bass. Cool. I now have a plan of attack. Thanks for the input guys!

Joe is a super cool dude. Spoken with him numerous times. He was with Modulus in the 80s. The reason they take a lot of time is bc it is a relatively small company and Joe is one of the bug dudes. He has a cool cool job. I hope it all works out for you. Keep us posted!!

Heck even godin at least wrote me back and said they didn't care - I own four -always include the serial numbers - have called or emailed at least 10x

Well, I took my Q5 out to Tony at Planet Bass. Great guy! He replaced the blend pot and all seems to be well. I'm really anxious to get it home tonight and run it through it's paces. I also got a chance to play some really nice MTDs and other basses while waiting for the work to get done. That's one dangerous place!

Glad to hear it was an easy fix that was solved quickly!

I can understand they're a small company, but shouldn't they get back to you at some point? I custom ordered a bass from BC and received the wrong finish on the neck, gloss, but ordered satin.

At that time, during the discussions about rectifying the incorrect neck, I also asked if it would be possible to get an unlined fretless neck instead of the original fretted one that was ordered. I know that I changed things up a bit and that is on me, but I was told that they had a spare neck that they could possibly fit to the existing body and that solution would take 4 weeks to complete. The other solution would take 8 weeks if they had to make a new neck if the spare didn't fit/line up correctly.

I sent the brand new VJ to Modulus over 4 weeks ago and have not heard anything from them (Anderson), despite being assured that they would let me know if they would be able to go with the spare or have to make a new one.

I sent a couple of emails to ask what the status was on the neck or if they had even received the original bass I returned but have yet to hear anything back.

No bass and no communication from Modulus. Am I expecting too much by wanting to know what is going on with the neck swap when I was told I could possibly have it back by now? BTW, I already paid for the bass in full [DEL]accept[/DEL] except for the fretless neck upgrade which was to be paid when completed.

Thats really sad customer service

No, you are absolutely right. Something as simple as prompt communication goes a long way in creating satisfied customers.

You have me all wrong. I agree with you. I was merely trying to calm another TBer down. Modulus' customer service has been notoriously bad for years. If you looked back through the last 4 years of Modulus Mob pages you would know that it took me over a year just to get a Modulus T-shirt. Their online store hasn't worked in over 2 years. I asked for help getting screws and ferrules for my Q5 and I was sent the wrong screws (mine were rusted, corroded, etc) and then was never able to get back in touch with anyone.

However, I will say that when I did finally get in touch with someone at Modulus he helped me on the phone, via email, and it was fine. I bought mine used so I can't really comment on warranty work, but if a company is selling $2500-8500 basses, they need to be quick with customer support. Hell, Rondo Music sells $100 basses and they take their reputation VERY seriously. Only heard great things about Rondo's customer service....I have bought a bass or 2 from them in the past and it was great.

I hate that the customer service at Modulus is not up to par....in the long run it will affect their sales. I have no idea if they have 5 employees or 50 but I know that they all have several jobs they do at Modulus.

Gotcha, thought that was the case and was also just agreeing with your point.

The good news is I finally heard from Modulus this morning and have been informed that the replacement neck is being made and should be completed in two weeks. Anderson was very apologetic for having not returned my emails sooner and said that they will be contacting me once the new neck has been completed.
