No, not personal theft, and I don't consider this little faux pas even in the realm of theft. Last time I got into dispute with a Bank, they lost to the tune of $12000, so I'm not the best person to ask, considering how honest the banks are ; )

In addition, all large retailers plan on a percentage of stock to be lost due to "inventory shrinkage" (damages, theft, incorrect shipments quantities etc) Some have this as a small number, others (i.e. HD and Lowes) have this as a larger number due to the high value of the items in the store on average. I'm in this industry, so this is reality, not 3rd or 4th hand info. In 2007, HD alone budgeted for over 150 million in shrinkage just for their "special orders" programs. This does not include the shrinkage they budgeted on stock items. But I digress.

For full disclosure, I would probably pay for it. I would constantly hear my grandma in my head telling me it was wrong!!

Good for you for paying for it. Karma will come back around for that.

Karma can be a bitch. I would probably go pay for it starting with, "I was distracting the incredibly helpful cashier with some silly conversation, and she missed charging me for this."

My mom ordered a small inexpensive hand vacuum cleaner and the company sent her the large "everything" expensive vacuum cleaner. She called them several times trying to return it and get the one she ordered. Finally she was exhausted trying to correct their mistake and just kept the expensive one and reordered the small one. She made every effort, but they could not figure it out. She really liked that new one she basically got for free and had no guilt about it.

Their loss. Did they pay you gas money to go back. Those are the responses?

Between this thread and the grumpy neighbors thread I have lost a lot of respect for specific members and the forum in general. The completely selfish and self-centered mindset of many responses is disturbing. One doesn't have to look far (a mirror will often do) for reasons why people are the way they are and why things are the way they are. The complete lack of respect, kindness, compassion, caring, trust, responsibility....wow.

We already knew the outcome since you posted about it, if you were not going to go back, I doubt you would have posted about it. But I suspect that you felt you needed a little bit of positive validation for coughing up the 250, as likley the manager probably didn't care or even figured you for a chump, likely hates his job and his stupid boss and Home Depot.

However, there is one major burning issue that remains to be 'eliminated'.

This 250 dollar item, it was the toilet? Right?
