You might be right about that. But, I still contend that if a store forgot to charge me $250 for a particular item there would be many a "HEELZ YEAH!" yelled that day after which I would buy a Iron Ether Proton.

I'm with those that say Karma is a harsh mistress.
Knowing my luck I'd install the free $250 item,...and the next day my $250,000 house would burn down (okay I don't live in nor own a house).
I'd be interested to know what the reaction was from the store.
Theft of any kind is not good, even if you feel like the "victim" deserves it. Ultimately you are hurting your fellow consumer. These corporations protect their profits well and even if they budget for shrinkage; who do you foots that bill; the company or the consumer?
If I spot it, I'd go back and try to get my money back. If I don't manage to spot it, tough luck for me. Similarly, the store guys should've spotted not having charged the OP for that. They didn't, tough luck for them.
Again, if I'm overcharged, I doubt if any store employee would be honest enough to tell me that later on and pay me back, even if he/she does manage to spot this fact.
I've been on the wrong side of such incidents numerous times, so all of the above thoughts are my personal opinions. These are, in no way, indicative of what's morally correct. Maybe other people on this thread don't get embittered so easily and support morals irrespective of whether they've been wronged or not. Sadly, I'm not one of them. I can only go so far in my quest to be morally correct.

There are so many good people anyway. I know some that are so good that there need to be really bad people to compensate!
And on the whole matter I am with Kwesi. And either the people that think the same don't dare stating their opinion or some people in this thread is lying to us and maybe themselves, because it can't be true that only 2 people writing are selfish bastards that will keep the money the people so stupidly drop into your hands.
I would start shopping more in the store when the same cashier is at work hopping more money would come my way!

However, since it's so much easier to be a good person when it's not your wallet in question, I will tell you to do the right thing, be an honest man, etc, and go back and pay.

If there ever was any doubt about the course of action that should be taken, at least the item in question should tip the scales. If a man can't take the morning dump with a clear conscience life would hardly be worth living.

I don't see why they would "stir up a bunch of **** over this", though. You discovered they made an error, you're correcting their mistake. They don't take a $250 hit to the balance sheet. Who would be mad about that?

Frankly, I couldn't care less who's fault it was, lol. My thoughts: "Just got a $250 item for free and successfully got out of the store without being chased. WINNING!"
And there's always my three favorite words ever for damn near any dishonest situation: "Who's gonna know?"
That said, I would shop at another hardware store for the next two weeks or so, lol.

Anyway, I have to meet these 14 year olds, the few I know are just plain annoying. Besides that, I get the impression that you haven't the typings of many drunk people. As far as the "lols" go, I usually try to limit them to two per post - you know, don't want to oversaturate or anything. And I'm much more surprised that you're surprised that there are people wouldn't wouldn't think twice about their good fortune in that instance. Well you're half right. I know it's theft, I just don't care. Not that I've made myself look any better but I thought it was worth clarifying.
Judge not lest ye be judged, we are talking about a 'non malice of forethought' $250 mistake here, not The Great Train Robbery. If you want to attribute blame for serious crimes, start at the top, with those who get away with it everyday, the one's we are supposed to look to for guidance, and careful you don't fall offa that horse.

Ignore the ripple effect?. Take the cash and the receipt back and pay?. Maybe someone loses their job and a family ends up homeless over an honest mistake. The big orange box despite being an employee owned company, ain't exactly famous for being a kind, understanding employer.
That might be a moral dilemma worth discussion but whether or not you are morally entitled to benefit from the error?
