My mom ordered a small inexpensive hand vacuum cleaner and the company sent her the large "everything" expensive vacuum cleaner. She called them several times trying to return it and get the one she ordered. Finally she was exhausted trying to correct their mistake and just kept the expensive one and reordered the small one. She made every effort, but they could not figure it out. She really liked that new one she basically got for free and had no guilt about it.

To me, this is a very different situation. Your mom made a good faith effort to let the company know that they had sent her an item that she had not paid for. There was no dis-honesty on her part, in any way.

I would keep the vacuum with a clean conscience, and use it.

What I had in mind, though, was if something extraordinary came up immediately afterward, like really heavy hospital bills or something along those lines that completely drained my budget. I would still end up paying them for the goods I got, I just wouldn't sacrifice my (or my family's) ability to eat or sleep under a roof to do it. I would budget until I could pay them.

OK, now that the dilemma is over......how is the project coming along? Are you taking before, during, and after photos?

Since I am not in construction anymore, I am totally into the remodeling projects around the house for myself and others. It's almost like an addiction.

Well, in all fairness, my initial reaction to the situation was more mixed. But in giving it more thought, it became more and more obvious to me that there was only one way I could go.

Better is a relative term. I could argue that the better man is the won who works a fortunate situation to his advantage placing him in better, however slight, financial standing than he was previously.

We already knew the outcome since you posted about it, if you were not going to go back, I doubt you would have posted about it. But I suspect that you felt you needed a little bit of positive validation for coughing up the 250, as likley the manager probably didn't care or even figured you for a chump, likely hates his job and his stupid boss and Home Depot.

However, there is one major burning issue that remains to be 'eliminated'.
