What JT said. It should be obvious that anyone so obese does have a mental disorder. To suggest that they "just stop eating" is the same as telling the clinically depressed to "just cheer up".

Thank you Fuzzbass! That's just about what I was going to say. ;)

We're all human, and we are ALL weak in some area. It's just that this guy's problem is there for all the world to see.

And it may well cost him his life.

Sad.

If i continue my current lifestyle i will never, ever get to weigh 1/2 a ton. I can guarantee that.

Also, if i continue my current lifestyle, ive already done all my weight gain.
Ahh, not necessarily. Aging has an awful lot to do with metabolism change. Just because you can maintain your weight now, doesn't mean that you will later. Similarly, just because you may not weigh 1100 lbs, doesn't mean that you can pass judgement. When you're 42, sitting at your ideal weight and perfectly healthy, then you can bump this post and continue your criticising. :hmm:

Did anyone else notice that the editing on the article is crap? Then again, I suppose that's ABC News for ya.

Deuel tried many diets. Even now, he sometimes longs for his favorites: pizza and burritos.
That implies that his favourite diets were pizza and burritos, not his favourite foods.

Heart failure, thyroid problems, diabetes, pulmonary hypertension and arthritis the physical effects of obesity were robbing him of life. Deuel needed an oxygen machine to breathe and help just to roll over in bed.
A comma, dash, or the word "are" would have all made it grammatically correct between "arthritis" and "the".

Bad grammar in most situations doesn't really affect me, but daaaamn. This is a published article, and someone get's paid to edit these. That, my friends, is the true stupidity involved with this article.

John may have said youth... I'll call it arrogance.

The point isn't weather you'll get fat. It's about addiction, genetics, etc.

How is this guy's problem any different than a drug addict who OD's, a smoker that gets lung cancer, or an alcoholic that gets liver disease. Why didn't they just stop - are they that stupd?!?!

Obesity seems to be the last bastion for ridicule.

It must be easy to criticize when you're perfect.

Definitely sounds genetic. We used to breed "fat rats" in the lab. There's something different about the hypothalamus, that affects the hormonal functions related to eating. Behaviorally speaking, the "fat rats" never seem to get "full". They just keep eating all the time. There's something wrong with the switch in their bodies that says they've had "enough" food. I feel for the guy. That's a terrible medical condition, not to mention the devastating psychological effect that it must have had on him throughout his entire life.

did anyone read where it said he was 90 pounds in kindergarten? 250 pounds in middle school. genetic predisposition and thyroid problems are at least partly to blame here - anyone going around and saying "just stop eating" to someone in that situation is not only ignorant but callous in the extreme.
Nonetheless, if you consume fewer calories than you expend, you cannot gain weight, thyroid problem or not.

Agreed. Two years ago I was 250 lbs (I'm 5' 11"), then I started to become hard on myself and managed to lose 100 lbs.

I seriously get pissed off at people that weigh well over 500 pounds and put everyone else at a disadvantage.

How do you feel it puts everyone else at a disadvantage?

I agree with JT and the others, some people have addictive personalities and stopping isn't an option for them. Have a some compassion, nobody laughs at drug addicts or people who self harm. Why laugh at a man who probably feels bad every moment of his life?

I guess it makes you feel better about your "perfect" life by laughing at someone whose life is so extremely hard that it is rapidly becoming impossible.

On a side note, metabolism changes drasticly later in life. My friends dad weighed 150-170 lbs all his adult life until he was about 41-42, then his metabolism changed and he didn't alter his diet, he now tips the scale at about 300 lbs. Just words to think about since you to think your body will stay constant indefinitely.

This may well be my last post here, at the very least last for a long while, so I might as well make it a lengthy one.

This man is a moron. His team of 8 doctors are wasting their time. As much as he wants to lose weight now its actually going to kill him he shouldnt have got to weigh more than half a ton, its his own stupid fault and to be honest i cant believe it.

This bit amused me most:

The former restaurant manager has been bedridden since last fall and hadn't been out of his Nebraska home for social reasons in seven years.

Social reasons... such as weighing over half a ton maybe?
Or maybe he feels so horrible about himself, he does not wish to be seen. Whether it be 50 pounds overweight, or 1000, this can have serious mental impacy on people and their outlook on themselves, and life in general. Who the hell do you think you are to judge them? Do you possibly think that no overweight people can be good upstanding citizens? Do you honestly think they enjoy being this way? Some people choose this no doubt, but most dont. My family are pretty much all overweight, and in my eyes, you just called myself, my family, and countless others a bunch of fat, lazy, worthless individuals that aren't worthy of your respect. My brother is one of the best damn guitar players I have ever heard. He is no longer playing, thanks to arrogant, condesending, and ignorant views of morons like you. Your liberal "rights for all" views seem pretty hypocritical to me, in light of this mindless, condesending thread.

I am overweight too, and have been most of my life. I don't eat like a rabbit, but I do not overeat either, by anyone's standards. I spent the better part of 10 years doing a profession that is much more physically demanding that any exercise program you can find. I maintained my weight of 236 for the majority of the time. It has gone up some since I got out of that due to tearing up my joints doing it. It is nice to know I am looked upon as worthless and lazy, when no one knows anything about me.

PS, I also find it amusing you are so critical of "images" when your own you brag about is the current flavor of the week.

Agreed, I eat a ton more than most fat people, such as a large pizza for a snack or a salad bowl of cereal haha, and I'm 6'2 and 179lbs, it's just a matter of laziness, if your going to eat a lot you gotta exercise it off.
Well gee, it looks like you have all the answers! I mean, it is obvious that everyone's body works the same.......were all a bunch of lazy swine.

For the rest of the typical OT trolls who chimed in as usual with a worthles response: grow up and get a life.

Sorry guys (actually I am not), this stuff really pisses me off, and is offensive to a lot of people. But, since the PC crowd says it is okay to target these people, I guess it is fair game, regardless whether I like it or not.

Since I have religious beliefs, am conservative, and a fat ass, I obviously have no place here anymore. Shame, there are some good people here, but wading through the BS to find it isn't worth the effort anymore.

But with a thyroid problem, you may not have the energy to excercise (or walk to the front door for that matter).

We had a thread much like this a while back. I instructed the readers to look up Prader-Willi Syndrome. Even without reading the rest of the article, I think that this guy probably has it. PWS kids CAN'T NOT be hungry. They never know what it is like to feel sated. Ever.

Picture eating till you're stuffed ant still feeling like you're starving. Now picture some smartass skinny teenager saying "Dude, just say no to pizza and burritos." Yeah I'd have to hit someone too.

I'm a fat guy. I'm okay with that. I'm big but not as big as the numbers make me sound. I'm 5'11" and about 310-315 lbs.
But I was puny and had every rib showing at 215 lbs. When you hear people talking disparagingly about fat people who claim to have 'big bones' I'm the guy they're making fun of. I actually look thin at 240-250. Someday I'd like to be that light again. But I'm not going to let someone who thinks being fat means I'm lazy or in some way defective spend time sharing the oxygen aroung me. I've had enough of that forever. Toasted, you pissed me off. And that's usually hard to do. Next time you look at a big guy and feel all smug and superior because you are young enough to still have a fast metabolism, just think that a fat old dude like me could probably snap you like a twig. And then the guy that comes to save your life afterward, might be another fat old dude like me.
