More Promethean Review

Loud was cool for a few moments in the sixties when being able to make music at unheard of volumes was brand new.

Now what....how about good tone that doesn't exceed the ear's ability to not distort the sound it receives? Now you're talking.

Don't leave the house with anything less than a 4x10 and 500-1200 watts and you'll be able to "talk quietly but carry a big stick".

That's very good advice.

I think the miniturization of high powered bass amps has really just got people expecting too much. The super high end, small rigs (TC/Markbass) come at premium prices, and I think the best of the TC stuff still has a small 2X10 enclosure so you move some decent air and still get the power. Markbass has the mini 121 which has a 1X12. Even Line6 has the Studio 110.

All of these were meant for very small, jazzish or studio use. Most of them actually advertise them as portable studio rigs. Expecting any 1X10 combo to cut it for most gigs, even small rooms, won't happen especially when its a full out full bore band.

We all get a little giddy now that bass power has become transportable without a Ford Econoline to bring it with us. Ibanez has introduced their version, and its a good first shot. But I wouldn't expect it to carry the load with just itself tucked in the 11O combo.
