I figured if I put tort and flats on it, it would get better.... But it didn't!

As stated: You are unfamiliar with the correct techniques for leveraging the benefits of this wonderful natural substance, which God has given to us for our enjoyment and spiritual edification.
"leveraging" can work.

It worked out fine. It was a short scale bass and I sold it to Bill Wyman for $1000. He left the flats on it, but removed the tort. He used it for 3 cuts in a 1963 Stones demo session - said there was nothing that came close to its sound. He still has it - it's worth about $25k now.
