Gosh, you're right. Perhaps the thru-neckers had noted its absence, held that note, and wanted to sustain it longer? I've also noticed here that mahogany-body owners have warmed to this thread more than maple-fretboard owners (although they've been the brightest comments), basswood types' egos have been easily dented, especially when attacked by plectrum users and the SVT owners philosophising has been pretty heavy. Has anyone done nickels versus... or would that be dull?

Experience counts: I once had a $75 used piece, Brand X made in the Philippines ( nothing against filipinos - some of my best friends are filipinos ) . It sounded like a mad dog when he farts, and it played like a rip-saw turned upside-down. I figured if I put tort and flats on it, it would get better.... But it didn't!
