Most stupid feedback from a professional jury...

I like what you guys are into a great deal. Here's the problem. People are people and musicians aren't. We're MUSICIANS and we look at each other that way.....

Gentle Giant - On Reflection (studio version) - YouTube
One of the most gifted bands I have EVER seen in my life. They never had much of an impact however. The musician community loved/love them to this day, but the general public turned a "cold shoulder" to them.
As much as I hate to admit it, if a band (ANY band) wants to be successful (commercially) they have to adhere to the "rules of rock" 4/4 time signature - get 'em on the dance floor!!!

When you said "time changes" and "complex" I had in mind some terribly boring indulgant music that I would probably admire your skill, but not enjoy it much.

Your stuff is unusual, but not inaccessible at all. You'd have to be pretty narrow-minded not to understand it.

Don't get me wrong: we haven't got any problem with feedback or critiques. I actually think it's one of the most important things in becoming a better band/musician. So there's no problem in getting feedback when you ask it, duh...

" without doing some research. It really isn't that hard to watch a video on youtube, is it?

It's MUSIC. What's to "get"? It's not like they're expounding upon some deep spiritual truth about the nature of God. There's nothing to "get". People either enjoy it or they don't. If they don't, it doesn't mean that they have superior intellect or that their music is above people's heads. It just means that some people don't think it sounds good. Playing music with odd timing or opposing timings because it's challenging or shows off some sort of skill doesn't mean it sounds good. There's a reason that type of music isn't very popular...and it's not because everyone's too simple to "get it".
yeah--you gotta understand that if you are going to veer from the norm, then you can't expect that everybody's going to like it. I had a similar experience with a battle of the bands where I was in a reggae/foux jazz group and the winner would open for a local favorite, hookers 'n blow. The band that won the night I played (it was a multi-day comp) was a beatles/Lynrd Skynrd cover band lol it sucked that we didn't win, but then again, reggae doesn't pump up minnesotans for hookers 'n blow.
But it's the same story with you guys--your band sounds cool from a musician's standpoint, but if you think a bunch of 22 year old girls (what every venue wants) are going to stay and watch your band, you're delusional
I say keep making the music that you guys are making--it needs to be out there!
Hey, i'd like to share this, because it's just so absurd...
With my mathcore-jazzmetal band ShtGn ("shotgun"), we tried to enter a band competition. We were rejected for the competition and asked for some feedback from the jury. We got this response:
jury: "The rhythm is so strange. There seems to be no melody. We don't think it can be played live."
our reply: "So, didn't you guys watch the videos from our latest gig?"
jury: "euhhhmm, no..."

Stupid jury. After all, what do those guys know about music? I know, I'm a beginner so I don't either, but at least I'm learning and trying. They aren't.
Oh, by the way, the song that first pops out in your channel... is the title in Spanish (it sure sounds like it)? You know, "Esta Mierda no es Democratia". If it is, it's "Democracia" instead of "Democratia". Other than that, pretty good Spanish, and pretty good song (not my thing, really, but it has a refreshing sound to it).
"This **** is not democracy". Hmmmm. In some countries this should be the national anthem.

Kinda confused here.
Why work so hard to create something defying all norms, then be surprised when people who can only feel secure in clinging to those norms, don't get it?
Rather than be all upset by that fact, I would think you would be proud your goal of singularity was validated by the judges rejection of your music as proof it strays waaaaaay outside the box.
Most people like things nice, safe, and boxy, it's obvious you and your band mates do not, so why all the angst about not being understood by the mainstream?
Is that not your goal after all? To play what you want with no regard to what others think of your music.
Working so hard to be different then getting upset because you don't fit in the mainstream is like wearing a mini skirt and griping about all the attention such a garment invariably draws.
If you want your band to impress contest judges, do what impresses contest judges. If you want to be known as the band who just does what it wants with no regard to what anyone else thinks, keep doing what you are doing and quit worrying about what some judge thinks.
It's never easy to take the road less traveled, and forget ever making a living on that road. it's a barren, thankless place to dwell, but at least the venues will suck and the crowds will be small.

But seriously, I understand your pain (a bit). I'm in a psychedellic rockband. Most of our stuff is 4/4 but we like to do some odd signatures occasionally (once or twice each set).
We used to have one song where we'd just add two extra measures after the intro before having the song break loose. We did it just because it felt better... After performing it, at least two drummers came up to us to inform us about our "timing mistake"
. Regular non-musicians didn't even notice the extra two measures and didn't feel anything was wrong in that song :')...
Don't lose any sleep about it. You guys are good and you'll surely reach a crowd. Jury's aren't always that "tasteful" in my opinion.
