If a cool bassist will make you interested in a band? Does a crap bassist put you off a band?
I like tothnk it doesnt, but I'm not sure I can say that honestly?

Well.. depends on the rest of the band.. if the band has a bad bassist but great everything else.. I'll listen to them.. but if they're like Blink 182.. I just leave it.. lol. But bands like Dream Theater and Symphony X, they're great all around. Amazing musicians! But with newer bands.. if they have a cool bassist.. there's a better chance of me listening to them. Oh well. hehe
..thing is, if a bass player is crap, then the groove is non-existent and the music is consequently crap.
Tomorrow night i'm going to see mudvayne with disturbed at the palladium. I personally think mudvayne is a breath of fresh air from all the backwards red cap wearin fogeys jumpin around claiming to have a "fresh, new sound" when they're just blending previous music styles into one great big terrible mix. Mudvayne however CAN take from past elements and blend them together with new, or otherwise unthought-of ideas and approaches to the music. These are, however JUST my opinions and observations. I'll come back thursday and give a mud-review....
I dunno if a mediocre bassist would put me off of his whole band or not. I mean, the bassist for Staind is very very boring as far as adding flavor to their music but I really don't care. I think Staind's new stuff is pretty hip. That new song It's Been Awhile is very cool to me but it has no bass in it. No fresh catchy bass I mean.

As usual the first few bands of eth genre are the pioneers and generally are good, but they're generally followed by a whole host of crap.

MuDvAyNe is nothing CLOSE to thrash metal. Obviously the only song you've heard is "dig". While that IS a good song, it totally misrepresents MuDvAyNe's sound/style. Listen to songs like "death blooms", "nothing to gein", or "severed" and you'll see that there's more to the MuD than lightning fast riffs and growling vocals. They DO have their (at least what i consider) melodic side. If you take the time to "open your mind" the peices will fall in place...I do, however, repect your view of MuDvAyNe as NOT being a breath of fresh air and everyone is entitled to express their opinions....anyway, just my $.02.............

I haven't heard any of their stuff, but I hear that the bassist is very good. My exams end on Saturday and when I sober up I'll have to do some downloadin'....

What im most impressed with, of anything on the CD, is the bridge (?) in "Death Blooms". This is the part that goes "I just want to run, fly kites, wrestle, jump and play..." at 1:15. His chord picking is outstanding as far as tension goes. I especially love the B(min) over C! Very, very good playing there.
I really don't think you are giving the other members of mudvayne enough credit. The drummer is one of the best I have heard (you have to be if your bassist plays as fast as ryknow) The singer has really good range (nothing to gein, ect.) and the guitarist....well he is kinda on the chubby side and GOOD FOR HIM if he can make through a two hour show without passing out.................
I agree with him. The drummer is pretty good too. I just got the CD. It's awesome. Ryknow is definitely one of the best bass players I have seen.

You have some very good points my man. I say whatever style of music you are into then more power to ya and who cares about what anyone else thinks about your personal tastes. Mudvayne is my style of music and i love em.
And on the issue of originality. who cares. I'm a little tired of being told " hey that sucks because its been played out." well every damn thing in the world has been played out at some point so lets just stop bitchin about things that aren't original and just make some awesome body and soul movin music brothers! how bout that!! yeah! music is our religion!! play it proud and with your heart and if its been done before, so what! keep on rockin and hoppin and groovin cats!!! later guys

Hey thanks Nubassplayer. We just all need to stop worrying about what has been played out and what hasn't because eventually musicians are gonna run out of good creative ideas and they'll end up making crappy sounding music because they won't want to go back to the good ol days when music was music and not a competition to see who is the newest or the most original. It will all become old eventually but as long as the artists who make it still love it aswell as the fans it will never be overdone. So come on. Lets just have fun and bow down to kiss the feet of this thing we love so much. Enough bickering over originality. We all admitedly have old school influences so why be hypocrites and try to turn it around. Its all good and its all original if its from your heart! later cats.
I got the "Dig" dvd yesterday. It's great! 
First off, the vid is great. Then you can watch it in diff angles.. you can watch each individual guy.. or watch them from when they were in that dark area for the whole vid. It also has the making of the video. It's pretty cool. I recommend buying it if you actually like these guys.

Mudvayne is a group of incredibly talented musicians. I was never into metal and laughed at the their CD after I saw how ******* wierd they looked. But high recommendations sent me to get it.
The chemistry between Ryknow and the drummer is amazing. They change time signatures, styles, patterns at the drop of a hat and it amazes the **** out of me, especially after I've had a good smoke.
The vocals and guitar are nice, but I'm not the greatest judge of that.
Get the CD. It'll blow your mind.
