I just find the Russian Muff doesn't fit too well into a band setting. I love the way it's such a natural (is fuzz natural?), open sounding fuzz but I don't like the fizziness of the harmonics, they're too prominent to be usable if that makes sense.
Makes perfect sense. I sold my RBM to my guitarist for that exact reason. The Bass Big Muff was a little too tame for my purposes, but you might have a different feeling about it.
Mudfuzz did comparision between BBM, vintage Sovtek and GGG-tuned version. Enjoy:

Was the one on the right modded? Maybe to creamy dreamer specs? The green LED tipped me off...or maybe it's just a new LED.
also a bit too woofy (is that even a word?). If I can find one 2nd hand at a good price I may well grab it and spend a bit more time playing around with it.Don't worry about gutshots. Too much work. For me, the regular Russian and the modded are both blah.
Which Russian did you bring? Red LED or green? If you brought the green, which I am guessing is modded to Creamy Dreamer specs, it would have more gain than a normal Russian. Apparently, the BBM is based upon the Black Russian, so they should pretty similar (minus the blend and boost options).
BTW, rehousing a Black Russian is not worth it, IMHO. The board is huge.
If you want more gain, the non-Russian versions will have more gain, but mid-response and muddiness/treble will obviously vary. Your other option, if you're concerned about your tone w/ a muff in a band setting is to get a blender.
I don't know, Ryan. I can get gut shots if that would help answer your question?
Just spent 30 mins A/B'ing the BBM with my RBM. I'm not completely convinced...
It sounds really awesome but it doesn't seem to have as much gain as the Russian (which is a shame). Also it sounds quite compressed to me compared to the organic sound I like from the Russian. The normal mode was my favourite, the bass boost made it a bit too muddy for my liking.
It's definitely got alot of presence and the fundamental note is there as well as the harmonics. It retains the low end really well, especially in the dry mode, though I do find it a bit of a pain not being able to dial in how much dry signal you can blend.
To summarise:
It's an awesome pedal but I didn't bring one home with me. It's a little too tame if that makes any sensealso a bit too woofy (is that even a word?). If I can find one 2nd hand at a good price I may well grab it and spend a bit more time playing around with it.
Yeah, not as much gain as many other muffs is a reasonable complaint. It doesn't have the sizzle/sparkle of the Russian as a result. The quest continues!
I heard the A/B/C clips of the Bluebeard posted here on TB, and it sounded too wimpish compared to my Sovtek.
I think the Supercollider is the best bet at this point with the Musket being a close second.
You tried the Swollen Pickle, or The Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B?
?
.No...I'll be able to try the Swollen Pickle and I'll have a look on your site at the Pickle Pie B. The PP-B is a clone of the SP right? What is that sets them apart?
Did you do a review of the Swollen Pickle? I was sure you had the original and the reissue. Or am I completely imagining that?
Sorry for all the questions.

The GGG is different from the Russian versions by a few capacitor values as well as many reisistors.

From playing with my bluebeard and my GGG sovtek clone ive found that the sovtek has way more bass but the bluebeard has a much higher gain and more mids. I like both but in different ways.
) who make the GGG muff tuned to the different specs of the muff variants?Muffs I own currently (and I feel set):
D*A*M Ram Head
People are diggin' the new Swollen Pickle. Vegas/Thom and Dave Edwardson are loving theirs for sure.
we all know that LEDs are a massive factor in the tone of pedals, blue and purple tend so sound the best.![]()
