Muff clones

Thanks for the clips grygrx.

I really like the sound of the Swollen Pickle. It's a really deep but still smooth tone and the highs sound in order and balanced (unlike the Russian where the harmonics are a bit too messy for me). A bit too farty on some settings but that doesn't matter. I'll definitely be checking one out when I can.

As for the Hoof; I love it. That's the kind of sound I'm looking for. Sounds like it's got alot of gain but still has a really tight sound...and those harmonics really sing . The tone control doesn't sound quite as extreme as on my Russian muff which is great :bassist:. That's at the top of my list at the moment. Just need to find a used one on the cheap now haha :hmm:.

Grygrx: any chance you could talk Black Russian vs Hoof? What does the Hoof do better and vice versa?

Me yammering over both pedals for a minute: a direct compare

Notes:
I don't have a production model, but a one-off someone else bought (and flipped). I have no idea if they are different or not.

Compared to the Black Russian the Hoof has a tighter low-end, as it doesn't bloom on sustain. I'm sure this is to tighten it up for guitar use, but it does rob some lows in my opinion.

It's much more under control for me than the russian, a tad more refined and tame, making for an excellent and cutting riff/solo sound.

The mids-shift knob (which is an internal board mounted pot on mine) can help you get the cut level you are looking for. If you turn it all the way down, you probably do get a bit more low end back as well, but I've got it set for where I've been using it (recording) and didn't open it up and change it for these demos. The production version of the 4 knob hoof has this knob on the outside.

I hate the russian form factor, lack of power tap, super-loose pots. Obviously the hoof has none of those issues.

Thanks alot for doing that, I appreciate it. I see what you mean about the Hoof being more refined. I also agree about all the flaws in the Russian Muff :(.

The Hoof definitely has the sound I'm looking for. I really like the idea of the mid control as well, which is external on the newer ones :bassist:.

Was that your jazz bass?

I've been playing around with an Ibanez PD-7 and an EH BBM recently - running them in parallel using a Boss LS-2. The PD-7 provides the top end fizz in "OD" mode and the BBM in Bass Boost mode with the Tone at around 10:00 provides the low-end fuzz. Sounds lovely, although I've only been able to try it through my practice amp thus far so it might actually be horrible. :)

Brief update if anyone's interested - tried it extensively through my main amp yesterday and today. Sounds even better than I thought it would, I was a little worried about it sounding too scooped for my liking but it's not at all. When I go back to just using the BBM it sounds so lifeless and boring in comparison.

Doom fuzz on my Blackout Effectors Musket:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=999123&songID=8502014
First section is my jazz bass, with both pups full volume.
The second section is the bridge pup soloed,
the third section is the neck pup soloed.

the fourth section is where i turn the Musket's tone up, both pups full volume.

then the fifth section i turn on my OCD, sixth section I hit the HP switch up on my OCD.

Sloppy, but fun.

BTW, this was recorded with my Zoom H2. Hence a little bit of gain overpowering. lol.

not really a muff clone but one of the best sounding fuzz pedals i have ever heard...

still trying to justify buying one..

Too many controls for me sadly. Sure it sounds awesome though .

Interested in this...wouldn't mind hearing more.

Oh and cheers for the clips Will ;). The musket is a bit too out there for me, still love it though. I want to get one at some point :bassist:.

Lots of good info here.

Grygryx, the one that sounded best to me was that D*A*M Ram Head, I watched each review and even the shootout with it. Is there something on the market, still made and obtainable today, that is close to it?

Bear with me on the details of why I liked it, I am not much for Effect vocabulary just yet. But to me it sounded like the lows blended into the fuzz much better than the others, and sounded less like the synth multi-pedals I've heard, and more like what the darker sounding Marshall Tube amp settings do with guitar.

Just trying to own ONE muff and want it to be the closest to the DAM that I can get w/o paying Ebay prices.

I a/b'd custom green Sovtek with Pickle Pie B today. They are very similar but there are of course some differences.

Pickle Pie B is more modern hi-gain pedal. Muff is more muffled ;) and vintage sounding pedal. Its tone control is more useful as you can dial muffled bottom with fuzz on top and the tone's range is wider. Pickle's range is very narrow as it soon becomes very trebly. On boomy setting it almost doesn't have distorted top. Blend in both cases works exactly the same.
