Multi Scale - Fanned Fret basses / Schecter vs Ibanez

I voted Schecter. Not a lot of love for ENG HZ pups, but I like them, with the right pre they sound killer. Plus the longer scale works better on the B and E. The scale does matter, at least to me...in my arsenal of 5ers, I have e Dingwall and a 37" scale B is awesome (my other 5ers, all Spectors are 35"), even tension and volume across all strings.
Schecter. YMMV.

does anyone knows what type of strings for srms800 ? d'addario long scale or super long scale ?

D'Addario Long Scale 37.1" winding length should be long enough for use on an Ibanez with Mono-Rail V/5s top load bridges on 34.5" scale length. I have no problem using them on my 35" BTBs.

thank you so much for explanation,...i have planning buying that bass actually,..any cons ? ,.....i am confused between d'addario prosteel eps170 and coated nickel exp170...both of it fit for srms800 right ? which one has longer durability and darker sound ? do you ever tried that string on srms800 ?

I've used Pro-Steels in the pass. They are on the far opposite side of dark sounding strings. I've never used their EXP coated strings other than the ones for acoustic bass. I was never impressed with the EXP coating. For me, the Elixir Nanoweb coating is the way to go when opting for coated bass strings.

And, you might not need darker sounding strings with the SRMS. The Bartolini BH2 pickups on that bass aren't exactly the brightest sounding pickups.

Yes that's why i love bartolini on ibanez rather than nordstrand ,aguilar or sonic arc pickups,...but elixir is 45-105 for electric basses....any suggestion string product 45-100 that could improve dark tone on srms800...?

Elixir does have 45-100 in nickel plated steel and stainless steel variants with both having the Nanoweb coating. Although I don't see anything wrong with putting 45-105 on the SRMS800.

Looking at multi scale - fanned fret basses as my next instrument purchase. Dingwall is not even on the list, too rich for my blood.

What I'am looking at are these two

Ibanez Bass Workshop SRMS800
selling for $949 new

So right off the bat, there's not enough price difference to matter.
I already own an Ibanez SR400EQM, my first Ibanez bass, bought it new, and absolutely love it. I've owned Carvin and Cort basses, always bought used, until I bought the Ibanez.
+1 for Ibanez.

The Ibanez comes with Bartolini BH2 Humbuckers
The Schecter comes with EMG 35HZ humbuckers
+1 for Schecter

The Ibanez has a bolt on neck. Scale length 33.5" - 34.5" multi scale, 24 medium frets
The Schecter is thru the body. Scale length 34" - 35" multi scale, 24 jumbo frets
+1 for Schecter

And here is the biggie for me, neck / headstock design. The Ibanez actually has the nut down into the first fret, not flush with the end of the headstock like the Schecter. It actually leaves a dead space of unusable neck. Now I know it's because of the fanned frets, but if Schecter could pull it off, why not Ibanez? I know it's probably fine, but it just looks weird.

But...
I have never owned or played a Schecter Bass before. Don't know enough about them to compare to Ibanez. My late cousin played Schecter 7 string guitars and raved about the quality and build of them.

The flip side, I've been really happy with my Ibanez, could get over the "look" of where the neck meets the headstock. But a lot of people here have not been kind when it comes to talking about the Bartolini BH2 pups. And that has me concerned.

So what are your thoughts and opinions?

As someone who owns a Dingwall i recommend saving up for a dingwall lol. But if I was to buy a less expensive fan fret bass I'd probably either buy the ESP

or do a parts build with the novax aftermarket neck designed to fit fender basses

The esp model has the same odd end of the fingerboard thing going on as the Ibanez but it's actually the most similar to the longer modern style dingwall basses as far as scale length and how extreme the fan is. The novax/fender bass is the most affordable way to get a retro styled fan fret bass.
