just to reiterate... Keyboard synth rocks. I tried a ton of effects before I settled on keyboard synth. So many more possibilities.

I pretty much nail Hysteria and Uprising's sound with a Prunes & Custard going into an Iron Ether Oxide. I haven't tried to get it THAT throaty...but when I mix the B3K at the end of that combo it gets REALLY nice and crunchy.

I never do anything based on what 99.5% of the audience is perceived to notice. No musician should.

But seriously, I've played Hysteria in my old band and Uprising in the new one, I use the same Bass Big Muff for everything....and get the same "nailed it" comments from everyone. and I love Muse too, seen em concert three times, and even Chris doesn't always sound like the record, especially the TIRO intro always sounds thin and weak live.

I got a good TIRO sound from a Line 6 M5/9:



Doesn't have the greatest tracking, but it gets by. I agree pretty much any fuzz will do for most of their stuff. I used a Seollen Pickle blended with an overdrive and still got compliments for hysteria. I don't think anyone cares.

I've gotten a great approximation of TIRO out of a Swollen Pickle with the gain turned down between 9 and 12:00 (can't remember exact settings).

I actually bought a Line 6 M5 on the strength of the above video. Gets the sound much better than my Mooer Fog, plus it's a tuner, chorus, phaser, fuzz etc.... (ooh, the octaver effect is the badgers nadgers!)

I like the live sound of TIRO even more than the studio version(bit cold imo) and I can pretty much nail it with LS-2, loop A going through Mastotron and loop B going through another fuzz, the Darkglass duality. Mastotron gives the synthy feeling, while Duality, when left with enough blend in it, gives a ton of low end with the hairy fuzz adding to the tone. Much wider, controllable and enjoyable sound for live covers especially.

I play mine through a Digitech BSW with settings at 0 - max - 0 - 4, into an MXR Bass Comp, then till into the Anadime Bass Chorus.

It's definitely not the exact sound that Chris Wolstenholme uses, but my band mates and I love the sound of it.

Easiest way to cop a tone similar to that is some kind of bitcrusher. Maybe run an overdrive through it for a bit more punch, but something on the lines should get close.
