Music Man StingRay Club | PART FIVE

AFAIK, right now, the only other 38mm options are in the Joe Dart collection, which is fine if you buy into the Ash/Maple passive with big white knob concept. The SLO Special neck option is seemingly, and sadly, ancient history.

At least two folks here have recently ordered SLO Special necks on basses directly from EBMM.

I do recall now hearing about an SLO Special. Didn't know one could order one directly from EBMM - good to know.

Sold my last Fender today to pay for my Retro 70. Now I only have Stingrays and proud of it. This is all I need and want.

Sounds perfect to me, no pun intended. I am sorry to say I had to go in the other direction. My back just can't support the weight of the heavier Rays. I am trading my 77 for a Fender Aerodyne Special 4 and an Ibanez headless 5 string plus cash. I hate to see my old Ray go, but there's no point in keeping that bass in its case when someone else could be playing the heck out of it. Congratulations to you though!

Thanks! No point keeping something you don’t use. I get that. I had Fenders just because I felt I needed them in my stable. They rarely got played unfortunately. I always wanted to reach for a Stingray. Mine all sound different enough to keep and I enjoy them all.

Looks like you have a Special 4H, Classic 4 and 5, and a Stingray 5 right? That's a nice collection. Is your SR5 ceramic or alnico?

And all single H's, too!

I have a Special 5 and a ceramic 5 and love both. Like you said about yours, they're different enough to keep and enjoy. I've never had an alnico 5 (or even played one yet), though, but that's one that I've been interested in. How does it compare to the sound of your Special?

I used to own the same SR 5HH with the ceramic pickup and Sterling preamp as you. It reminds me of that sound when in series mode. In parallel it's a tad brighter and thinner sounding. So it sound closer to your SR5HH then your Special.

In the process of creating my own DarkRay. I recently acquired a 2020 BFR Stingray Special fretless 5 string. Everything is great, but the 3 band EQ just didn't produce what I wanted it to. So out with the old, in with the new - I installed a DarkGlass Tone Capsule, my favorite upgrade preamp, and it sounds perfect now. Now, all I need is to figure out how to wire a three way pickup coil selector switch. At the moment, it's just wired in parallel.

Question for you - do the 5H 'Specials' have a 3-coil pickup with Series, Parallel, Single (+phantom), or are they 2-coil with Series, Parallel and 'Filter' switching? If the latter, the 'filter' is part of the preamp so that option will be lost. Also, with the 3-coil pickup the switch and preamp were tightly integrated to incorporate level matching between the various pickup configurations - that will also now be lost.

It’s series, parallel and filter. I don’t know where the filter appears in the signal chain, or whether it’s on the switch or preamp board.
