I have vintage 76 and 88 Stingray 4's and now a 2008 SR5. Besides being a 5-string the main difference is the classic Stingray tone which the five doesn't quite have.

Just found this used beautiful honeyburst Classic 4 at my local GC. I picked it up and could not put it down. It plays like a dream and best part is that it only weighs 8.8 lbs!! I had no choice, I had to put it on layaway. I managed to take a few pics before the sales guy took it to rest in its case. I came home to research it but I didn't think to get the serial number. And now I'm confused as to what year it was moreless manufactured because as I searched, I found out they have discontinued quite a few colors since they were reissued. Can't seem to find any info on honeyburst Stingray Classics. Anyway, I'm not sure I'm qualified to be in the club yet but man am I super stoked about this beautiful instrument! It is super fun to play, I can't wait. I can easily see it becoming my #1 which is a huge statement for me because I've never been a "Stingray" guy. I have only always been curious. But this bass will suit me well in that I play in various disco, pop and rock bands. Heck, this bass will be perfect for RnB too...makes me want to jam like Nathan Watts did on "Do I Do" and play a bunch of Paul Denmon's Sade bass grooves!!

The neck on that bass was a bit deeper than I like. The black classic bass felt better to me so I have always played it in preference.
The 5 was for variety (and a challenge as I hadn't owned one before).

Wow, I never saw a Classic in honeyburst. But it sure looks 100% legit and as they started the Classics a few variations - like unfinished necks - came out.
Just ask them with the serial number and they can tell you more about it.

Best neck I have ever played! When I tried this bass in the store I couldn't believe how light it was. I heard that it was very hard to find stingray5 that weighed less than 10 lbs, so I told myself I had to bring it home. And wow, 8.9lbs when I weighed it. The flame maple neck and fingerboard are so gorgeous that photo doesn't do them justice!

Love that bass! I had one just like it for a few minutes but had to return it since it arrived damaged and had some poor QC. That was a sad day for me but happy for you!
That's exactly what I thought when I picked up mine. I was blown away by how light it was! I HAD to get it. Good job... congratulations!!
I love how his sound is pretty beefy and full. I feel a lot of players are attracted to a Stingray for the way it cuts through on the treble side.... for slapping and grindy metal tones. But I've come to realize that it can be way more versatile. I'm going opposite on that approach. I'm putting flats on mine and going for a more mellow but present tone such as Paul Denmans tone especially on Sade's live stuff (my interpretation anyway). It just sounds so sophisticated and classy! But I'm sure every once in a while I'll slap some rounds and do my best Flea.... how could I not? Haha

Flats sound so great on my 4H. Honestly it almost sounds like sacrilege but so do nylon tapewounds! The "thwack" you can get is so unique. SR def gets pigeonholed as a 1-trick kinda bass. It's versatility is ignored for sure!
Finally played my BFR Stingray at 2 band practices (RHCP tribute and an originals band). It just annihilated. Fantastic tone and feel (and looks!). Got compliments from both bands, and I'm pleasantly surprised with the 3 band preamp (I used to play a 2 band USA SUB for years and loved it). Some serious punch and power there. To my ears, it had more mids and less of that low bass, almost sub bass frequencies compared to 2 band. I had my settings at center detent 90% of the time. Some serious volume, punch and power out of that thing compared to my previous jazz.

They actually reside in their cases when not in use, and I rarely use 2 basses on a gig (it only ever happened once).
