You know how you see a photo and that little voice says "That's it! Forget what the Mrs will do to you, get it now!"?

Here's my 2017 Classic. Thinking about going to flats on it.

Well, this is NOT the place to come if you really want to be talked out of buying new gear. So the best I can say is do whatcha gotta do (or whatcha already did) and good luck with the missus.


That is a sweet bass so, who knows, it might be worth whatever price you end up paying (and I don't mean what Sweetwater charged you!). :D

Very nice, dont see many SR5's with flamed maple tops; and the lack of pickguard is a bonus.

Friend once told me "You're going to pay for it either way.
Might as well keep alittle for yourself" Think he went MGTOW.

it's a fantastic bass, and more than worth the risk of sleeping in the back yard for a week. Could it be a little lighter? Sure, but I'll deal. :D

I followed the usual scheme: had it shipped to the office, took it home to the "gear room" (which she stays out of for the most part). Then when she finally notices it and asks, I say "oh, I've had that for a while...".

Ha! Yeah, too many of us have used that method too many times. That can and usually does work, but we all probably also know that not REALLY the best way to do things. :D

Does anyone actually give our number in this thread anymore? Or do we post pics of our Stingrays? I've had my Classic 5 for a couple years but never really followed up here for a number but it doesn't really look like that is done anymore.

Stingray #2 was just delivered and is waiting for me to get home and play after work. This one is a standard 4H, but still has the 2-band EQ like the classics. I am a huge fan of the 2-band pre, it's just so fat and smooth with the perfect amount of bite. But I also love the oil/wax neck finish, which my Classic does not have. I've never been the kind of guy who has multiples of the same bass, so that just speaks to how much I love Stingrays and how well they work for me. Looking forward to seeing the new one can do.

I'm finding the sound to be a bit thin and honk-y, thinking I'm too accustomed to using Sunbeams on everything lately that whatever these red-wrapped funk strings are need to be swapped out... just ordered some 40-100 Sunbeams for it to see if that improves. The neck is something else, could really get used to this perfect satin finish and the flat radius. Can't believe how good of shape this is for being from the early 90s. The grain and trans teal finish are hard to photograph.

We've asked a LOT about numbers, the concensus is that your number is the number of your first message. i'm going to use 1978. congrats on some fine basses. The great thing is they are (mostly) affordable too!

Thanks and I agree about the 2-band EQ, but wasn't sure I would find a standard Stingray with one. Nothing wrong with the 3-band, it would have been ok if I wound up with that. Thought about just getting a Classic 4 because I love my Classic 5, but I prefer the oil/wax neck finish to the gloss on the classic and the body contours are nice too compared to the slab body on the Classic. When I saw the red one, it checked all boxes so I had to pounce on it and I'm glad I did.

EDIT: turns out my first post was about 4 years ago when I got a regular SR5 which I no longer own, so I've updated my number to 256. Not that anyone cares :D
