Musical Confessions

Counting Crows (IMO) falls into the same category as Hootie & the Blowfish, Gin Blossoms, Spin Doctors, and a bunch of others - great bands that got too hot too fast.

the comedy hits keep coming...

the bands you listed and a superlative like "great" do not belong in the same sentence. who's next, Creed?

one dude's singing about how a dolphin made him cry... that's not "great.." that was officially the death blow of rock 'n roll right there.

I think the line you are referring to is a reference to the Miami Dolphins pro football team. Many "grown" men have cried over the performance of a sports team. Not rock music's finest moment, but not quite a Milli-Vanilli low either.

I think Rush is unimportant and uninteresting. The best thing I can say about their songs is that they are "unoffensive". Geddy Lee's talent is overshadowed by his boringness, Neal Peart isn't worthy of licking Mitch Mitchell's shoes, and Alex Lifeson's guitar playing can best be described as masturbatory. It makes me sick to see them treated like gods by musicians. It takes more than 3 reasonably talented musicians to make a great band.

I would rather listen to a good song writer than a good bass player...

Counting Crows and Spin Doctors are GREAT bands...

I know you are tired of hearing about him from your guitar player, but Stevie Ray Vaughn is an amazing guitar player and has that perfect blues voice...

I can't get enough of the new era of John Mayer (Continuum, Trio)...

+1 to Worker201's response.

This is musical confessions, not "I care what you think about what I like." I happen to love Creed's first album, and consider it to be a great album as well. Might even have to add it to the "Albums you consider perfect" thread... Can't say much for the rest of them, though.

Also,
I hate "metal guys." Seriously, you all think you're hard, but you're one step away from a D&D tribute band.

Totally. Although I didn't start the thread, I feel like it's the sort of thread where you can "come out of the closet", so to speak. There's a lot of players and bands mentioned over and over on this site as being genius, and I'm sure not everyone agrees. So this thread is a place where you can finally come clean and admit you're not impressed. Also kind of a place to admit you really like something that most people think is crap. Definitely not the sort of thread to go around bashing people's opinions and making fun of their tastes, or trying to re-educate anyone.

sorry you took it so personal, if i had known you were the Hootie & the Blowfish apologist i'd have chosen my words more carefully... btw, i could care less what you think of Rush.

or maybe you're just a cryass dolphins fan? my condolences, Hootie.

Genesis. I don't get it.

Everything after Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, I agree.

I think solo bass sounds awesome, is beautiful, ect. but I don't actually enjoy listening to it. It's like watching Eraserhead, reading War and Peace or getting you wisdom teeth removed- Torture, but you feel better afterward, a sense of accomplishment....

After 6 year s of careful, dedicated, steady practice procrastination, I still suck at bass, but people still like to hear me slap. I feel like dropping the instrument.

4 years after returning to music - I feel the exactly same way.

minus the slap part cuz that ain't how I roll.

I think that Dream Theater and other (wheedly wheedly wheedly allthescalesknowntomaninonesong) bands are missing the point.

math makes wonderful looking sheets though.

I think that some the really avant guard metal heads these days have more soul and ability than most of the jazz guys I hear today (and I work at the school of music)

1+ modern jazz is largely over studied and tired. it's lost it's way.

I think that the guys who produce hip-hop and rap records these days have more talent than the rest of the industry

probably not.

I'm terrified of music piracy. I have no idea how to get my music heard, because i'm not novel or an exceptional prodigy or anything.

i've come to appreciate that you don't need to be a prodigy - you need to connect with people.

if you can truly connect - people will respond and spread the word.

talent < human connection.

I complain about not having gigs, but I don't look that hard for bands to play with.

logically this is easy. practically very difficult.

give up the complaining part and do nothing else.

or .....

create something to actually complain about by seeking as much rejection as possible in pursuit of your goal.

Jeff Schmidt=musical genius, but I fall asleep to Outre.

totally disagree with part one - totally agree with part 2.

Bass distortion is unnecessary and takes away from the music, but damn fun

-1000.

you obviously need to listen to Link Removed - for free, to kids. All bass - all distortion. All the time. :D

:bassist:

I don't understand why Pet Sounds is considered one of the greatest albums. A couple of great songs, but otherwise, yawn...

I named my son Adam after Adam Clayton - my wife thinks I chose it because it's biblical. I may never tell either of them.

Our praise band jammed on "Play That Funky Music (white boy)" one weekend at church.

don't understand the allure of the rolling stones - i guess you had to be there or something...
most bass solos are absurd-sounding things -especially high register solos.
not a fan of slap, and it feels like most folks these days just do it for the WOO value - makes the crowd go 'wooo'

i listen to a lot of bass players, but i can only claim one or two as influences. my main influences are drummers.
