Better than black trainers/sneakers, especially with shorts.
But black socks with shorts is a definite nono irrespective of the colour of the footwear.

I only wear either designer socks, or graphic socks.

Always long.

Even my plain black have a designer logo or name stamped somewhere along the top/ or some kind of a crease/indent design to give them a classy look (as not to look like those corduroy type or crummy tube socks someone would buy at walmart).

Plain black and white socks are for children and hard labor. IMO.

A friend of mine who played jazz gigs in NYC for many years told me that there was a tradition of trying to sneak past the bandleader with bright colored socks. There was a guy who would wear two pairs of socks, and roll down the black ones to reveal red socks underneath.

This very question was fretted over, in the Bicycling Community. The consensus was White, however, I wear what I feel like.

Additionally, Cycling Shoes were deemed White, or Black, as being appropriate, which is why mine are Red.

If you're wearing cargo shorts, a hawaiian shirt, a fedora, and sandals, then black socks are a must.

All I own are black socks.
Its my #1 life hack.
Every 2 years or so, I take ALL my socks and THROW THEM IN THE GARBAGE.

Then I buy 24 pair of the exact same black ankle length gold toe sock.

Come laundry day, I can match and fold my socks with my eyes closed... perfect every time!!!

Except.... sometimes, I have one extra sock.

I simply refuse to stop wearing clothes because some idiot who is trying to sell me stuff I don't need tells people it's no longer cool.

I interpreted the OP to mean we shouldn't wear white socks on stage, which if they show I can kind of see, as they fluoresce under UV. If you have any sort of stage lighting they could really show up. I still wear them shamelessly every where I'm not bathed in stage lighting (which is everywhere)
